Dr. Abraham Low trains us that to know is to know when we don’t know - at times, perhaps often, we don’t really need to know

Earth is full of ppl in pain, stuck in the crazy of fear and anger. All human beans are subject to the possibilities of this reality. We are all biologically & physically affected as well as emotionally. Learning the ways we work & our world works will give us the best chance at self control, influence over our worlds, and positive productive lives

Discovering the #fediverse gives me the same feelings #linux did years ago. The endless choice, excitement of discovery, clash of philosophies and a community.

I spent years #distrohopping from #ubuntu , #arch , #voidlinux , #nixos etc and then back to arch. Also spent a long time switching desktop environments and window managers like i3.

I started on #lemmy and #mastodon . What do I try next? #selfhost an #activitypub server? Which one?

😇

#WritersCoffeeClub 1/7: What are your biggest hopes for the writing world in 2025?

that people can realize that for all the bad ai does it does good stuff as well though that may be the world as a whole but for writing specifically, don't shame people who use AI as a tool to help their writing be it grammer or proof reading or in other ways.
#Soapbox

My #Pleroma instance, Coder Dansu (dansu.org), presently uses Pleroma BE for the back-end and #Soapbox FE for the front-end.

I updated both today to the latest git sources. This was the first full update in a few months. It was more difficult than I'd have liked due to the need to resync some Soapbox FE patches. However, everything seems to be working now.

I've considered switching to a different Fediverse setup at times. However, if I did this, I'd lose everything in the current data.

This is a #Fediverse issue that should be looked at at some point. There ought to be a standard which permits migration of an instance from one type of Fediverse server to another type with minimum loss.

On the bright side, I like how my instance works with my patches applied. That is a plus of both FOSS and Fedi. You can be part of a broader community and still decide things for yourself.

Another plus is that my Pleroma setup continues to be friendly in terms of system resources. It's a bird-like site which is quite light. System load isn't a fright.

You know, if you meet one person who has had a broken leg, you know them totally as a person, what they are like, and their politics.

Now, substitute “autistic” for “broken leg” or “transgender” for “broken leg” or … there are a ton of these you could use. People stop trying to stereotype other people. People are people. Yes some like the Identity first style but don’t assume a feature of a human being is their entire identity.

Ah! let me pull out my #soapbox.

I prefer "fiscally prudent": e.g. a pension savings which is diversified, including some growth but also guaranteed returns and accounting for inflation.

Fiscally conservative focuses on reducing risk, even at the expense of growth.

There is no such thing as fiscally risky, per se. 100% growth investment is not risky if milestones are weekly. It guarantees future losses; I describe it as 'foolish'.

How accurate is this?

Mastodon is one of many pieces of software made to interface with the Fediverse which is a type decentralized social media. There's Pleroma, Misskey, Soapbox and their numerous forks which comprise the most popularly used server software for spinning up your own fediverse instance. Mastodon is one such piece of Fediverse software which makes up the 'Mastodon network'. The Mastodon network is a sort of inner circle within the Fediverse which is comprised solely of Mastodon servers for various interests and niches.

Beyond that inner circle is what they refer to as the 'Alt Fedi' or 'Alternative Fediverse'. Which is more or less every other Fediverse instance that isn't Mastodon which also uses the ActivityPub protocol to federate with other servers on the decentralized network that is the Fediverse. Alt Fedi, or sometimes referred to as 'Dark fedi' is often characteristics as the wild west of fediverse instances where anything within reason goes.

You'll sometimes find marginalized groups that aren't part of the Mastodon network which use other fediverse software like Misskey or forks of it on the alternative fediverse. They tend to curate their experience through selectively blocking instances using fediblocking which serves as an instance-wide ignore function. Then there are your typical instances which can range from shitposters, channers and chuds which tend to not have any filters on the range of their speech. As such, you'll find these instances listed as "Alt Fedi" or your usual assortment of buzzwords listed as the reason for why they were blocked by that instance.

Mastodon is predominantly made up a minority of progressives that shout the loudest which left Twitter prior to Elon announcing his interest in purchasing the platform then later came in droves after he burnt it to the ground. They tend to be laughed at and mocked by the larger Fediverse for their tendency to equate that Mastodon equates to the entire Fediverse and their various attempts at trying to police the entirety of it rather than doing the sensible thing and keeping an allow list rather than a block list. Most notable of these attempts at policing the Fediverse has been the unified blocklist which is maintained by Oliphant of Oliphant.social, Seirdy of pleroma.envs.net, WelshPixie of Mastodon.art and a couple of other instances which make up the so-called '
Fedi council'. There has also been attempts by another individual beyond their clique at compiling a blocklist, namely the bad space which was bankrolled by begging on #mutualaid.
#fedimeta, #mastodon, #soapbox, #misskey, #blocklist, #fediblock,

#Politics #Soapbox time: Can we all finally get on the same page with the whole nonsense of "I don't agree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for you to say it?"

This drivel has been promoted by the likes of the NYT, or The Atlantic, or any given liberal magazine for ages, attempting to appear to be above the actual fight, and look where that has gotten us.

So when you hear anyone repeat this poppycock, shame and ridicule them. We'll all applaud you. 😉

Ok, I saw this and it pissed me off (yay internet, right?)

Why on EARTH would anyone want a cranky old teacher who thinks they should emulate R. Lee Ermey to be "good" at their jobs?

Any teacher who treats parents and kids with this level of overt disdain and disrespect can fuck off into the sun, as far as I'm concerned.

Teaching and learning are a collaborative effort and fostering an adversarial relationship from day one is asinine.

#SoapBox #Internet is #Bad for #Bloodpressure
#Teachers please DON'T do this

I know this is a skit but it makes me want to go through the screen and punch her square in the horse teeth.

“Announcing Ditto”

> Ditto is a Nostr community server. It has a built-in Nostr relay, a web UI, and it implements Mastodon's REST API.

> Since Ditto implements the Mastodon API, it can work with any Mastodon app!

> Users of Mastodon and Pleroma will be happy to see search functionality that actually works. 😂

> Ditto is built in Deno with TypeScript. It's basically a REST API with a built-in Nostr relay. This is the same design as Mastodon and Pleroma, replacing ActivityPub with Nostr.

It aims to take everything that's good about Mastodon and implement it on Nostr, with none of the downsides.
