I don't think AI is killing #StackOverflow; instead, it's the attitude of the users on there. I have seen many users attack people who ask questions. I see questions get downvoted because they are duplicates, or it's 'Why the hell do you want to do that?' When I see questions asked on Reddit or Discord, I notice that people are more welcoming and willing to help developers with their problems. I think that is because those platforms foster building communities. SO really dropped the ball there

The #StackOverflow #Podcast: Attention isn’t all we need; we need ownership too

Å få en sånn "human verification"-sjekk av #StackOverflow nå som de er dypt, dypt i LLM-sørpa er faktisk humor. Jeg forventer at for å passere testen så må jeg overbevise dem om at jeg er en bot, ikke et menneske?

Gotta say, with all the very clever gamification that has been put into #StackOverflow itself, this process feels like the exact opposite. It feels borderline hostile every step of the way. And because we know SO can do better, it doesn't feel like "stupidity" or "carelessness", it feels like "we don't want you here, so we're making this aspect of our business miserable for you".

... a couple of days later you get an email with a link to their internal platform, (this is where I failed my 5 captchas darmstadt.social/@claudius/114 ).

You are presented with a JSON file with no explanation whatsoever (I reckon that's fine for the audience), but that json file contains almost nothing.

It you think about the treasure trove of data #StackOverflow clearly keeps about its visitors, there's NOTHING of that in that JSON.

I honestly would have expected better from them :-/

darmstadt.socialClaudius (@claudius@darmstadt.social)I just failed **five** captcas in a row. Am I now a robot?

Gotta say I'm not a fan of how #Stackoverflow handles a #GDPR request for one's own data.

First, there's no visible "self service" thing in my account settings, in contrast to what basically everyone else does.

When you DO find the data request form (policies.stackoverflow.co/data) they make you fill out a bunch of stuff that wouldn't be necessary if they just offered a self-checkout.

Then a couple of confirmations (fair, they need to make sure it's not someone else impersonating). And then ...

Great article on the downfall of StackOverflow. I was a big user (and contributor) back in the day, but I got frustrated when I started seeing most of my questions being closed as off-topic even though I really put a lot of effort into making them well structured. It seems like I intuitively saw the trend in the article.

InfoWorldAI didn’t kill Stack OverflowHow the groundbreaking developer forum moderated itself into oblivion.

The original Stack Overflow was great. A few years after being sold in June 2021, they started feeding our questions & answers to OpenAI. They did it whether we wanted them to or not, giving us no options to opt-out or delete our data.

Now they have the gall to demand end users verify they are human, presumably because they don't want other unscrupulous entities scraping their website and monetizing our questions and answers.

Fuck them.

I hope they go bankrupt and die.
