Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>The latest data from the <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/SuttonTrust" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SuttonTrust</span></a> suggest that 'widening participation' at the top <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/universities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>universities</span></a> has almost no impact over the last 25 years... provided you equate 'top' universities with the <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/RussellGroup" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RussellGroup</span></a> which is not a perfect fit.</p><p>It would be better to use the THES ranking to identify top universities as some of the top 20, not in the RG are actually do a pretty god job - my own erstwhile institution, Lancaster U, for instance does pretty well on this &amp; is top 10 but not in the RG!</p>
