Miguel Afonso Caetano
"Civil society is deeply concerned over the crony capitalist, tributary-focused nature of this administration, especially as it relates to companies that control our access to the free flow of information. We have documented clear private sector winners, like Elon Musk’s Starlink and SpaceX, and how X and Musk amplify the administration’s messages. For instance, amid Trump’s attempt to negotiate a cease-fire between Ukraine and Russia—where Ukraine has been vilified—Musk amplified false claims that widespread outages at X were the result of Ukrainian attacks. Soon thereafter, President Trump returned the favor, claiming that consumer boycotts of Tesla are “illegal” and encouraged Americans to support the company.

The quid-pro-quo dynamic is not unique to Musk. During the previous Trump administration, Amazon lost high-profile contracts, for which it directly blamed the president. This time around, the company has reportedly made a series of overtures, including signing a $40 million deal to support a documentary from the first lady. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ decision to intervene in the Washington Post’s endorsement of Kamala Harris was also widely scrutinized, as it came on the heels of visits with then-candidate Trump. Most recently, President Trump reportedly pushed Bezos away from a stance that would display the extent to which tariffs changed the price of products on Amazon. As companies ingratiate themselves with this administration, we fear that policy stances are shifting to the detriment of privacy, security, and political freedom."

https://www.newamerica.org/oti/blog/trumps-tech-governance-trumps-tech-governance-making-sense-of-the-first-100-days/

#USA #Trump #TechPolicy #TechGovernance #DigitalGovernance #BigTech

Miguel Afonso Caetano
"Big Tech’s influence in Washington, DC, is not new, but private tech and governmental interests are merging in ways that represent a concerning reconfiguration. In part two of our series on the Trump administration’s first 100 days, we highlight three key trends:

- Large tech companies have long sought influence in Washington, but many are now bending to state power because they know the administration is picking winners and losers.

- Today’s dynamic between the private sector and our government started taking shape well before November 2024.
Large tech companies’ acquiescence offers the government unprecedented power over communications platforms and infrastructure.

In analyzing the Trump administration’s first 30 days, we unpacked efforts to weaken the federal government’s pillars of independent oversight, undermine institutions protecting consumers and their data, and access sensitive data across government without regard for privacy and security. Each of these efforts persists—as dramatically demonstrated by President Trump’s attempts to fire Democratic Federal Trade Commission (FTC) commissioners Alvaro Bedoya and Rebecca Kelly Slaughter. These trends are also part of a dangerous new dynamic in tech governance."

https://www.newamerica.org/oti/blog/trumps-tech-governance-making-sense-of-the-administrations-first-60-days/

#USA #Trump #BigTech #TechGovernance #DigitalRights

Miguel Afonso Caetano
#PublicHealth #TechGovernance: "Inspired by the success of public health, leaders in technology and policy have suggested a public health model of digital governance in which technology policy not only detects and remediates past harms of technology on society, but also supports societal well-being and prevents future crises. Public health also offers a roadmap—professions, academic disciplines, public institutions, and networks of engaged community leaders—for building the systems needed for a healthy digital environment.

Yet public health, like the technology industry, has systematically failed marginalized communities in ways that are not accidents. Consider the public health response to Covid-19. Despite decades of scientific research on health equity, Covid-19 policies weren't designed for communities of color, medical devices weren't designed for our bodies, and health programs were no match for inequalities that exposed us to greater risk. As the US reached a million recorded deaths, Black and Brown communities shouldered a disproportionate share of the country's labor and burden of loss."

https://www.wired.com/story/tech-governance-public-health/
