Trying to decide which #KDrama to start after #WhenLifeGivesYouTangerines and deciding I need more time to digest and savour it, so back to #reading for a bit, I think to get back on track with challenges at #TheStoryGraph

Didn’t realise this was a StoryGraph feature. It’s pretty nice
Not a large number of books read, but that I’m reading at all again right now is enough for me
@michaelharley I have built an Amazon-free reading workflow that I love!
E-reader: PocketBook Verse Pro
App: KOReader is amazing. This lets me sync reading status between my e-reader and Android and Linux devices! The sync server can be self-hosted.
https://koreader.rocks/
Transferring books can happen wirelessly (I email to the e-reader) or with calibre since you don't mind the cable. The calibre Web server might work well for you, too.
Bonus: I use The StoryGraph and Hardcover.app to track reading progress instead of Goodreads (owned by Amazon)! KOReader has Hardcover integration! Hardcover has a GraphQL API!
Maybe I will finish the blog post I started about this!
@jonobie One of themany good things about the awesome stats at #TheStorygraph is that they me a VERY exact answer to your question:
Average progress through a book before DNFing 31%
Average time with a book before DNFing
2 days
Got through a fair few reads last year #thestorygraph #storygraph

If you haven't switched from #Goodreads to #TheStoryGraph yet, don't hesitate. I've been using it for a few weeks now, and it's Goodreads before it was enshittified by Amazon (and much more): you can add missing books, if you see problems you can't fix yourself, you report them and a volunteer librarian fixes them within a few days...
@chestas @bookstodon 1349pp hardback, 1488 in paperback, glad I read the ebook on my #Kobo, this not only held my interest, but is on my favourites list at #TheStorygraph - sublime!
I love what GoodReads offers, but I certainly don't love GoodReads. I've tried out The Storygraph about five years ago and thought I might try again.
I applaud the minimalist design. But I don't like that it doesn't put avatars on the review pages. Seems very impersonal to me. Also, why doesn't it distinguish between reviews and ratings (reviews without text)?
The book pages need getting used to, too. It's not ideal that you have to scroll down to see the overall rating.
@jewishreader LOVED that book , gave it 5 at #TheStoryGraph - @debcha is 'here' too. The book that took me the longest to read was another 5
read by another Desi author - Vikram Seth's sublime A Suitable Boy.
All done with the 2025 Reads the World Challenge at #TheStoryGraph
- 3 years in a row of sticking RIGIDLY to the "about the country BY someone FROM it" rule AND with the added personal 'rule' of choosing to read only #nonfiction for the challenge.
10 books, 3095 pages, average score 4.33/5. Not a bad start to the year.

" I’m not a writer. I’m a novelist. And the novelist does not know the joy of writing."
An interesting statement from Georges Simenon in "When I Was Old", a collection of notebooks he wrote in the (and his) 60s. My tenth and final book for the Reads The World Challenge at #TheStorygraph #nonfiction #memoir #AmReading @bookstodon
@liztai Here's one I read this month as part of the Reads the World Challenge at #TheStorygraph. It's not a long book, but dense and a tribute to the skill of the translator, I think

I was looking for a Story Graph reading challenge for 2025.
I like challenges with prompts that specify an SFF subgenre and make you try and figure out where your books belong. It's a neat way to learn and think about what you read.
I've already covered the main subgenres and was glad to find a new challenge for books that subvert the main categories.
With prompts like:
Portal Anti-Fantasy:
Characters reject the fantastical world or question its morality.
Example: The Magicians by Lev Grossman.
Dystopian Satire:
Deconstructs traditional dystopian tropes through humor or irony.
Example: Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson.
Post-Horror:
Downplays traditional scares for emotional depth and thematic exploration.
Example: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
This is a better list for long time SFF readers that are looking for novels that play with the main tropes of the genre.
I find that most of the authors I read today are working with established tropes but bend, reshape or subvert them.

@kmdk I can see why that would be so daunting. I only had 600 + books on GR, and went to #Storygraph, #TheStoryGraph. About 100 are missing the date which is not a big deal for me. Most of my books are actually on paper notebooks, I have kept lists of the books I’ve read with small reviews for about 45 years! For me if the migration wasnt successful, it was still better than any clicks of mine supporting #BadBezos.
I truly wanted to support the #Fediverse & move to #Bookwyrm from Goodreads. However, I had nearly 2000 books in total. There were multiple languages (i.e. special characters) & old stuff without ISBN numbers, or pubs only in a non-English language. I had to fix approx. 400 items by hand. Doable, but massively time intensive for the few I tried. At the same time, I tried migrating to #StoryGraph, too. There I only had 8 issues only concerning reading dates, not completely mismatched items like I had on Bookwyrm. I like playing librarian. I would have happily been an active helper fixing up entries, but I simply do not have the bandwidth. I have to set boundaries so I don't burn out in general. If I had started from zero books, I would definitely have joined. Not with the baggage I have, however. :( I hope others give Bookwyrm their support. I take comfort in the fact that I am now supporting a Black-owned business instead of J.B. #TheStoryGraph #Bookstodon
Man, even with great sites there are always "obvious" holes with UI and audience needs.
#TheStoryGraph is really good, but onboarding has holes as a new user. https://thestorygraph.com
- If I'm new or don't have any; explain what a "Buddy Read" is
- Same for "Read alongs" as those seem like synonyms to me
- Why are some tags green and some red? (Also; bad colour-blind unfriendly colours)
- There's room; tell me WHICH topics are flagged for me, not just that some are.
@bookstodon
TIL that there is an android app for #Bookwyrm (on #Fdroid).
I've had an account on bookrastinating.com for a couple of years, but after signing up and importing my books from #TheStoryGraph it hasn't seen much use.
I intended to give it some love a few months agy, but then #InternetArchive and #OpenLibrary got hit with that attack.
But I think that's been resolved now, and the android app will make things a little easier too, so I don't really have any excuses anymore do I?
