I think it’s really important for a kid to be left alone and left to figure it out for themselves how to pass the time. As a kid, I spent so much time bored and coming up with ideas of how to do things, so I’d write stories or I’d draw pictures or invent worlds through drawing or just in my head, just thinking about things. DoomsdaysCW
/Beginrant Personally, I use my laptop for browsing. But when I'm not near it, I jot down notes for things to research, songs I've heard on the radio (usually #WMPG), or news stories I've heard on #DemocracyNow. I've weaned myself off of expecting/wanting likes (especially on the Meta sites), and when I do check here (which is where I do spend most of my online time), notifications don't give me a high since I receive notifications about a few accounts, and not just my posts that have been liked or boosted. I do have a smartphone that I use for emergencies, or to text a friend when I'm running late, etc., but I've taken Messenger off, and pretty much just use Flora and Merlin to identify plants and birds (and take photos, though I have a DSLR on hand for those). The other day, a co-worker got mad at me because they wanted to call me, and had to wait for me to turn on my smartphone (my physical phone is now in the reception area). It's that kind of impatience that concerns me. People expect you to be connected 24/7, and maybe folks want to be connected 24/7 (or are afraid not to be). And yeah, are smart phones making us dumber? I think so. And making us impatient and anxious. Ugh! /endrant

Your Smartphone Reduces Your Brainpower, Even If It's Just Sitting There

A silent, powered-off phone can still distract the most dependent users.

by Robinson Meyer

"I sit down at the table, move my napkin to my lap, and put my phone on the table face-down. I am at a restaurant, I am relaxed, and I am about to start lying to myself. I’m not going to check my phone, I tell myself. (My companion’s phone has appeared face-down on the table, too.) I’m just going to have this right here in case something comes up.

Of course, something will not come up. But over the course of the next 90 minutes I will check my phone for texts, likes, and New York Times push alerts at every pang of boredom, anxiety, relaxation, satiety, frustration, or weariness. I will check it in the bathroom and when I return from the bathroom. I don’t really enjoy this, but it is very interesting, even if some indignant and submerged part of my psyche moans that I am making myself dumber every time I look at it. As, in fact, I am."

https://getpocket.com/explore/item/your-smartphone-reduces-your-brainpower-even-if-it-s-just-sitting-there?utm_source=firefox-newtab-en-us
#Smartphones #Disconnect #TurnOffYourPhone #BePresent
