Rites of Passage: The Strawberry Ceremony

"Traditionally, the strawberry ceremony is for girls after their first menstrual cycle. However, today it is offered to folks who identify as #TwoSpirit and to those who didn’t have the opportunity to participate as young people, like me. I didn’t have the chance to go through this ceremony decades ago as an adolescent, and I am eagerly looking forward to my own strawberry ceremony experience this year. In anticipation, I researched the strawberry ceremony and talked to those who had already experienced it to learn more."

It's funny when people try and insult my #masculinity I identify as #twospirit since 1) I have Kleinfelters and 2) I'm gay I don't think much about my #gender at all. I'm neither man, nor woman, nor non-binary. I walk around as a dude, because I enjoy that. But honestly....I could care less. Like honestly...I just have better things to do. Got to see the Susan #Wick exhibit, a local Denver artist, and the most extraordinary traveling exhibit Kent Monkman’s History is Painted by the Victors at the #DenverArtMuseum If you have a chance to see it near you, make the effort! He’s from the #Cree tribe, and his paintings disrupt the narrative of what North Americans are taught about the conquest of the indigenous, and the repression of #TwoSpirit culture. And it is unbelievably beautiful. Starring Miss Chief in many of the narratives. #queer #trans #art #OldMasters (I apologize for lack of alt text, when I can get the brace off or to a real keyboard I will add descriptions of the four Kent Mockman pieces below.)

One of my favourite artists on the list is Vivek Shraya! She has been making music, films, and literature for 15 years at this point and is incredibly prolific. Her film "What I Love About Being Queer" helped me a lot back when I was a baby gay! Her works about being a trans woman of colour are incisive and layered and just...no other way to describe it except that she was living in 2050 with her works even 10 years ago haha. A Canadian cultural treasure.

(also she released a zine whose subject is just "every mall in Edmonton." iconic)
