Maybe there should be an #openSource #UberEats.

Everyone -- buyers, delivery people, restaurants -- would be able to see and monitor all the internal metrics and the algorithm.

Everyone would see how much was being paid for the food, how much the restaurant was getting, how much the delivery driver was actually receiving, and how much was being taken for server overhead and minimal development and maintenance.

Maybe it could even be federated 🤭

I've been trying out doing double-duty delivery, Door Dash and Uber Eats, at the same time.

There are a number of problems.

1) In my small town, DD still rules, there just aren't the same number of UE. Long stretches of the night will go without a single UE order.

2) Juggling the two apps is possible, but you're left hoping that an order from DD is in the same direction as one from UE. They usually aren't.

3) Because of 2), you have to choose whether to pause or go offline, which (I think) impacts the algorithm and leads to fewer orders, or less valuable ones.

4) Customers really don't like (understandably) if they see you veering off route to another store (even when its an order on the same app!) so ratings are at even bigger risk if you don't make the timings.

5) UE seems to have far fewer tips, so overall, if it werent for the $15 "quests" of extra cash to complete an order the pay is not as good.

6) This is all more stressful.

Conclusion:

I think I'm just gonna stick to DD exclusively for now unless daily totals start going down or its a super slow night.

Since I unfortunately don't have my own mother to send things to, I had #UberEats deliver flowers to my wife instead, who is herself a mother. I don't usually do flowers at all, so she was pleasantly surprised. Worked out well, because she was just leaving the house when the delivery driver turned up. She opened the door before the bell went, and there they were. Couldn't have timed it any better if I'd tried.

Went to see Mickey 17, yesterday. Good, if frustrating movie (and, you'd probably hate it if: you were a Trumpie; had enough awareness to understand that Trump-y and MAGAty people were being sent-up).

I hadn't eaten before the movie, so we opted to stop by the snack stand for food. I'd gotten the tickets on a discount, so the snacks (two hotdogs and a 20oz bottle of water) were actually slightly more-expensive than our pair of seats were. As we were waiting for the dogs to come off the rollers, I noticed that there were signs for
#DoorDash and #UberEats in the food pickup area. I was a bit baffled. I mean, who's saying to themselves, "I really want overpriced movie snacks and I want to exacerbate the price by adding food delivery fees to it".

I further thought to myself, "I guess this kind of fiscal-idiocy is why there's people out there using Klarna with Instacart".

Well, not going to use #UberEats anymore. Subway got the order wrong but Uber are refusing to refund even though we had to order again. Back and forth with their automated system and finally got a real person - who still refuses to refund. What a rort.

"This week gig workers, trade unions and human rights groups launched a campaign for greater openness from #UberEats, #JustEat and #Deliveroo about the logic underpinning opaque algorithms that determine what work they do and what they are paid. Why, when the restaurant is busy and crying out for couriers, does the app say there are none available?"

“There’s nobody you can talk to. Everything is automated.”

The Guardian · ‘It’s a nightmare’: couriers mystified by the algorithms that control their jobsBy Robert Booth

Imagine having drivers so untrustworthy, it's no longer enough to just secure food deliveries w/ 'special tape'...

Now you have to give the driver a special PIN once they hand you your food to allow them to confirm they actually completed your delivery.

I'm so glad I rarely have to use #UberEats.

Today marks the 365th day since I started Door Dashing.

My first Dash was Dec 31, 2023.

It's a little slow tonight, as I thought it might be. But I won't be going out tomorrow night on New Years. So I'm hanging out in the parking lot, listening to tunes. 🎶

This has turned into a 2nd job.

A reliable source of income to cover costs. It's by no means ideal. My car got rearended at a stoplight in June.

I have a sore shoulder some nights.

I would like to do other things on my evenings and weekends, but it hasn't been bad.

I enjoy it. I have actually got to engage more with hockey (both local #bulldogs and NHL #canucks) by listening to radio broadcasts like the old days.

I've come to know my town a lot better. I've also come to know a much more broad variety of the people that call it home.

There is comeraderie between dashers as well as with restaurant workers.

Before, and when I started, I was frankly embarrassed, ashamed, that I was doing this.

What a stupid, privileged, ignorant attitude... totally unnecessary.

There should never be shame in working.

My family and friends have been so supportive.

I feel good and lucky to be able to do this. I am also grateful to live in a province that has forced the delivery companies to pay better wages.

Onward we go. Tip your delivery people if you can, but if you can't, that's ok too.

We're all just getting by the best we can. ❤️ 🍔 🍗 🍕 🥤 🍷 🌯 🚙
