After six years as VOA’s only Uyghur-speaking journalist, today I walked out of its Washington, D.C. newsroom for the last time. Over the years, I filed more than 300 reports across English and Mandarin services and helped launch VOA’s first Uyghur-language program—bringing global reporting to a community too often excluded from international media. That work has not been without cost. At least five of my former Uyghur colleagues in China were later imprisoned—not for any crime they committed, but as a warning to those who had once worked with me. Their punishment was simply being part of my past. Like many colleagues, I now step away not by choice—but with deep pride in the journalism we produced and the principles we upheld. I've just donated to this fundraiser to support Voice of America workers and contributors, who are affected by funding cuts and legal battles. Many of the people affected are under actual danger of deportation to hostile foreign regimes, who will attack them because of their journalism work.

VOA / RFA / RFE is, for many places around the world, the only way for people to get real information about their own country. And, now more than ever, the work VOA did is becoming relevant in America as well. The anti journalism playbook used against VOA is also coming to American domestic media.

For techies: the donation here also supports staff from the Open Technology Fund, which sponsors many censorship circumvention technologies (such as Tor) and which also has a FOSS fund. They were also defunded along with VOA.

In the meantime, however, #KariLake has plunged back into slashing the ranks of the workforce, w/hundreds of contract employees let go for a second time over the past weekend. The #VoiceOfAmerica website hasn't posted new stories in >2 months.

On Thurs, the full appellate court made clear it would not intervene, at least for now.

A federal appeals court on Thurs dashed the hopes of #journalists & #FreePress advocacy groups seeking to stave off the near-total dismantlement of #VoiceOfAmerica by the Trump admin.

जगामधल्या नावाजलेल्या आंतरराष्ट्रीय रेडिओ प्रसारण केंद्रांपैकी एक असलेल्या Voice Of America (VOA) नभोवाणी (रेडिओ) केंद्राची सेवा 15 मार्च 2025 पासून बंद करण्यात आली आहे. अमेरिकेचे राष्ट्रपती डोनाल्ड ट्रंप यांनी आपल्या दुसऱ्या कार्यकाळामध्ये अमेरिकन सरकारच्या खर्चावर नियंत्रण आणण्यासाठी पावलं उचलण्यास सुरुवात केलेली आहे. VOA बंद होणं हा त्याच पावलांचा परिणाम आहे.
