The image is framed in the upper right corner by the reflection of a low brick canal wall, and in the lower left corner by the edge of the boat, made of bright brown shiny wood. Reflected between them is a monumental marble building, with columns and crenellations, perfectly mirrored in the water which is completely still and flat, apart from along the boat's edge in the lower left corner where it is rippled and distorted by the boat's gentle wake. The overall effect of the image is one of a sort of optical illusion, reality being invaded and slightly distorted by a tiny vortex from elsewhere, and for me feels like it's asking us a question about what we perceive and how we perceive it.

At the top is a row of horizontal oval windows. The picture is all in shades of black and grey and dingy white. Almost in the centre of the frame is a seagull in flight, wings curved mid-flap in a shape reminiscent of the arched tops of the windows, but its dingy white and grey colouring means that it is so well camouflaged that you'd miss it if you weren't looking closely.
