Music is a great part of people's lives, especially pre-industrial (like most fantasy), when there's precious little else to do of an evening.

I was pondering this earlier this week, and should ponder it more as I go on writing the next few books.

Plus there was my webcomic too. Occasionally I added photos.

Now, if you want quality art, I've done commissions for all the major characters, but no one single artist would stand out there.

I typically write to music and the sound du jour often influences how I describe music in a scene.

1/2

If it is a real song, no lyrics. If it is an imaginary song, only enough words for the plot, for example, at one point my WIP says, "I heard the words 'suicide, suicide' before she turn it off."

In side side story I have a four line song which I adapted from a Tang Dynasty poem. It is plot-relevant and my work. I won't do it again so as not bog down the story. How present is music in your work?

The presence of castrato opera soloists -- who in our world were the first international musical star performers -- was one of the defining criteria of the worldbuilding that eventually produced Franz-Karl's Living World.

The Pristinists reject music: they don't even sing Yule carols. Otherwise, music is as close to everywhere as you can get with pre-recording tech, and music and musical instruments can be weapons for the Elderkin.

Aurora
#WritersCoffeeClub 16/04 asks how present music is in our work.

Not very and at the same time quite a bit. I like to communicate with my readers through the songs characters listen to. It's my way of saying 'Make some effort, will you?', which can be important if readers are confronted with a disabled own voice perspective for the first time. Example: Character listens to 'She's Lost Control' by Joy Division? Go research that song and then spend a minute pondering what I'm trying to tell you.

World Art Day!

There was an account on Twitter that used to post daily collections of curated art with slightly snarky commentary: artist of the day (birth or death), or a topic or person portrayed by a lot of different artists. Giving overviews of different artists and periods. They posted here for a while but I think moved over to Bluesky
I think the handle was something like p_p_rubens

However, as always, I really need to send a shout out to Stazinski. I've heard he's not super personable, but the man can write, and he gave me my intense love of foreshadowing.

Loads of hues, sunshine, epic lighting, a bit hazy and trippy.

And there is a collective called the “painting prophets” who paint predictions. Their work looks like that of the early impressionists.

#writingcommunity
