Continuing on from yesterday's wee look at Fioravantia's box we now get to check out the figure!
Those of you looking for a quick capsule opinion; he's Good, not Great. He's the best version of this figure ever released in terms of detail, modern engineering and pose-ability but there is some room for improvement.
NB: please note I don't collect Masterpiece figures, nor do I have more than a handful of original-design 3P figures at this scale, so I'm reacting very much from a bog-standard retail toy perspective
First impressions are good. He's a hefty brick of a toy, feeling substantial in hand for dimensions not much larger than a Hasbro deluxe. Car mode is to die for. All his "double changer" gimmicks work well, improving on the OG toy. His transformation is relatively intuitive, with caveats, very much following the pattern of the original toy (that's a nigh-constant theme of this figure - The Original Toy But Better). There are some interesting engineering choices that do require a wee bit of thought and checking instructions to resolve (to avoid breaking the figure, mostly).
The figure has metal arms and legs accounting for most of the weight, giving him pretty good balance. Although, see Bad Points below.
He looks fantastic, and will make an excellent display piece.
But, there are some BAD POINTS.
As you can see from the photographs I was -and still am- unable to completely close one of his headlights. There's a block underneath the headlight itself that pushes the whole thing up, that won't now sit back where it started from. A small niggle that nevertheless spoils his look in both modes.
Like the original toy he has problems standing upright! His ankle joints are small, plastic and a touch flimsy and don't feel adequate to properly secure all that metal weight above. It limits his pose-ablility somewhat. He has a tendency to rock back on his heels which can lead to him simply falling over if not posed carefully. A tabbing piece here to secure the swivelling joint-piece his ankle connects to would have really helped here because his actual ankle pivots are pretty firm.
I miss Chrome on his weapons. This is something I might apply myself. Would have been nice to have not needed to.
But that's really it. I'm very pleased with him and definitely think I can now move on to completing the set....assuming X-T don't make it another two years for the next one. It's just...if Hasbro or indeed some other 3P also want to take a crack at it in a way that's less fussy and is more fun to play with and pose....I won't say no. But it's going to be incredibly hard to top this one for pure G1 homage.
Enjoy the photoygraphy. And if you're reading this shortly after I've posted it bear with me as I add FOURTEEN alt-texts.
