Dr David Mills<p>It's not that I don't like Inkscape, it's just that I have steadfast views about the UI and behaviour of a vector editor, and it's not how Inkscape or any software but <a href="https://8bitorbust.info/tags/Xfig" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Xfig</span></a>, does it.</p>
Dr David Mills<p>I need to produce some ray diagrams for simple lenses and mirrors. Before I break out <a href="https://8bitorbust.info/tags/Xfig" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Xfig</span></a> is there any other free software people prefer for <a href="https://8bitorbust.info/tags/optics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>optics</span></a> diagrams? <a href="https://8bitorbust.info/tags/physics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>physics</span></a></p>
Willard Goosey<p>Another step in my saga of converting my <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/XFig" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>XFig</span></a> drawings into RISC OS <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/draw" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>draw</span></a> files:</p><p>I tried to print one of the draw files. Printer said what file? </p><p>Much debugging later, I realized that <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/GhostScript" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GhostScript</span></a> (which is at least 2 separate stages inside <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Cups" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cups</span></a>), doesn't like the fonts named in the files! (ps2ps is failing silently inside the CUPS scripts)</p><p>So I took the file I was working on and manually changed all the text blocks to be a known working printable font.</p><p>And it printed!<br><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/RiscOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RiscOS</span></a></p>
Dr David Mills<p>Ooooooh! I can programmatically control <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/xfig" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>xfig</span></a> </p><p>Happy Scientist!</p><p><a href="https://www.sternwarte.uni-erlangen.de/wiki/index.php/Plotting_with_the_S-Lang_Xfig_module" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">sternwarte.uni-erlangen.de/wik</span><span class="invisible">i/index.php/Plotting_with_the_S-Lang_Xfig_module</span></a></p>
tiago<p>Gcode enabled xfig </p><p><a href="https://genart.social/tags/gcode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gcode</span></a> <a href="https://genart.social/tags/xfig" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>xfig</span></a> <a href="https://genart.social/tags/OpenSource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenSource</span></a> <br><a href="https://harbaum.org/till/cnc/index.shtml" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">harbaum.org/till/cnc/index.sht</span><span class="invisible">ml</span></a></p>
Willard Goosey<p>Upgraded <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/NetSurf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NetSurf</span></a> under <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/RiscOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RiscOS</span></a> to 3.11</p><p>seems to work fine, and it now does everything I need it to do to convert my <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/XFig" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>XFig</span></a> maps to RiscOS <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Draw" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Draw</span></a> files!</p>
censored for “transphobia”<p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://fedi.seriousbusiness.international/users/swaggboi" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>swaggboi</span></a></span> <a href="https://freeradical.zone/tags/xfig" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>xfig</span></a> was good for that ~20 yrs ago. I assume it’s still around if you’re after a GUI option. For a text-driven option I suggest <a href="https://freeradical.zone/tags/graphviz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>graphviz</span></a>, which can generate PNG, PDF, PostScript, graphical text, etc from your text input.</p>
Willard Goosey<p>Finally figured out how to do a thing I've wanted to do since I started using RISC OS! How to convert my <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/XFig" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>XFig</span></a> files into <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/RiscOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RiscOS</span></a> Draw files!</p><p>Modern xfig can export to <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/SVG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SVG</span></a>. <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/NetSurf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NetSurf</span></a> can load plain SVG files and export to draw! Boom done!</p>
