Rachel Cusk is as interesting and deep and complex-thinking in conversation as she is in her written work. A pleasure to hear her at a LiteratureXchange festival event. I appreciate it when authors of her stature come to smaller places, not just to fancy capital cities and fancy flagship festivals, when they happily turn up for readers in libraries in small cities and towns.

Das dänische Digitalministerium stellt schrittweise auf #Linux und #LibreOffice um.

Ziel ist es, die Abhängigkeit von #Microsoft und anderen US-Anbietern zu verringern. Die Umstellung soll bis Herbst abgeschlossen sein.

Auch andere Kommunen wie #Kopenhagen und #Aarhus verfolgen ähnliche Pläne. Im Fokus steht die digitale Souveränität Dänemarks und die Förderung von #OpenSource-Lösungen.

Full description: We're standing on a grassy slope above the water's edge at Marselisborg harbour, Aarhus, Denmark. Beyond: wooded hills and houses on the opposite curve of the bay. The sky is deep blue with wispy clouds. Some thick wooden beams are scattered on the ground as benches. Grandly surveying all this nature as of they own it: a giant baby on a giant painting that is standing alone on the slope. The canvas is about 3 metres high and three metres high. The baby is in bright clothes backed by a bright blue square that matches the sky. A grey background with various patterns surrounds it. The baby is almost hyper-realistic, holding one toy, sucking another. Painted on its head as if quickly graffitied on by hand afterwards: a big bright gold royal crown. This is a painting in connection with the new SEEK street art and music festival at the harbour. Artist signature is hard to decipher - I think it says Lasse Elras.

Looking across a few metres of dull grey pavement at a mural on a gable wall in Graven, mid-city Aarhus, Denmark. ‘Woman standing on her head’, painted in 2008 by Herbert Baglione. The concrete wall has a triangular roof apex and no windows. A white naked female figure hangs feet first down the length of the top three storeys. She is dangling, but casually and in a relaxed position, as if just resting. The feeling is more ‘meditation’ than ‘hanging’. In her torso, two abstract figures are painted, as if characters inside her. Thick black hair haloes her head. The wall around her is a busy jumble of ferns and leaves and patterns in a mix of greys, blues and muted yellows. Below her head, the street level floor is painted with giant yellow letters, seemingly random. A black mesh fence runs along the bottom. In front of it right now, because of building work nearby, there is a jumble of stuff: a brown basket, a yellow railing, a wooden pallet, old placards, a builder's bag for concrete. Someone has rested their old black bike on the pile. The sky above all this is overcast washed-out white which makes it look as if the background has been cropped out. I should pretend it is, because then you’d think I have the ability to crop backgrounds out of photos and do other fancy editing tricks.

Glædelig mandag. Another Monday, another week in a world where events keep relentlessly happening. Here's a postcard from #Aarhus to wish you a nice and uneventful week.

In the gardens on top of Salling department store café, mid-city Aarhus, Denmark. We are 30 metres above the city looking east to the harbour and coast and open sea. Tall grasses in the roof garden frame the bottom of the image, bending strongly in wind. They glow green in bright sunlight. Beyond, the city, deep blue sea and deep blue sky, mostly clear but with low lines of fluffy white clouds low on the horizon. Between us and the sea, the city skyline, dominated by the 93-metre-high spire of the redbrick cathedral with copper-green roofs. Jutting up in different places, other landmark buildings, modern and historic. To the right, another local landmark: the blue 75-metre-tall industrial crane at the docks, angular like an iron giraffe. The feeling of the scene: fresh, open, like everything negative that happened last week has been blown away by the sea breeze and we can start anew.

Short version: a Mary Poppins mural painted around a window three-storeys up on a gable wall.

Long full description: We’re standing on the corner of Ole Rømers Gade og Montanagade in Frederiksbjerg, mid-city Aarhus, Denmark – a lovely mixed-used area with lovely narrow residential streets. Looking up and beyond, we see the top storey of a row of centuries-old picturesque two-storey houses. Each has a sharply sloping red-tiled triangular roof. Each is painted a different elegant pastel colour – dark blue, yellow, pink, light blue. The windows are multi-paned and white. Each has one dormer attic window. On the corner, a high, modern, designer wall of deep red vertical wooden planks with a black striped section for a door. There is a narrow elongated slit of a window in it. Rising beyond the fence: the deep blue gable wall of the corner house. It has a red-brick chimney and a single multi-pane white window on the top floor. Painted up the full three storeys: a Mary Poppins mural. The chimney sweep is a silhouette swinging off the top of a painted white lamppost right beside the window. It rises the full length of the gable wall, topped off just under the roof with a glowing white lantern. Floating up off to the right, a little lower down: a silhouette of Mary Poppins holding her red umbrella open above her. Above them, high electricity wires criss-cross below a metal-grey rain-promising cloudy sky that Mary Poppins seems about to float off into.

Glædelig mandag. Monday keeps at it, here it is again. Ah well. Here's a postcard from #Aarhus to wish you a good week, a light week, a bright week.

Aarhus harbour. A light bright day with cloudless blue sky and calm blue sea. Foreground, anchored right in front of us: the seaweed-covered prow of the historic dark blue trawler Jakob, a local landmark and sightseeing boat. We can see a red-and-white lifebelt on its red-and-white wheelhouse, a green anchoring rope, a red deck. Framed above the boat, the city skyline with turrets and the cathedral spire visible and, barely visible, a few people walking on the wide promenade.

The city is developing the old Aarhus County Hospital into a mixed-use neighbourhood. It’s a huge area and project that will take years. Some existing buildings are in good shape so while work is ongoing, the council has turned one into a Youth Culture House and the chapel into a Chapel of Culture. One wing has habitable living quarters so the council has given these to young people in precarious living situations including LGBTQ+ youths who need a safe place. Fair play to the council.
