Sit-to-stand: The simple test that reveals how you're #ageing

The test takes just 30 seconds to complete, but its results can provide profound insights into your health.

Getting out of a chair may seem a trivial task but your ability to do so actually reveals a great deal about your health. To assess this, doctors use the sit-to-stand test (STS), which measures how many times you can rise to a standing position from seated within 30 seconds.

I recently heard about the Age Positive Image library (agewithoutlimits.org/image-lib); the first free library showing positive and realistic images of older people.

This struck me as being a great example of kindness because representation is so powerful and it goes hand in hand with a campaign from the Centre for Ageing Better to challenge ageism for the benefit of all of us as we grow older.

I love telling jokes and being able to use my humor to break down barriers.

But sometimes, I wish people would take me seriously.

Like some people assume everything that comes out of my mouth is a joke. They start smiling and laughing before I even say anything. So weird.

I'm not just an incredibly handsome man with funny jokes. I'm quite intelligent too ya know? :)

Ah... #ageing #adulting

Went to a family birthday yesterday. It's funny how much dysfunction exists between generations. Elder generation still believes in 'respect' and traditions. Easily offended. Younger generations have so much apathy, unmotivated and are oblivious to social cues.

So glad things like this only happen once or twice a year.

Got a call from Dad this morning at 5.30, which is not too awful but it still woke me (for context, I'm usually up before 6 as I start at 6.30, but last night I went to bed late so was planning to sleep in a bit... but I digress)

Anyway, he wasn't feeling well, and given little-bit-scary experience we had a couple of weeks ago, we decided we'd go into hospital. Thankfully a quick visit this time! We got there by 6.30 and he was back home by 10.30 with more medications. We talked on the phone and just now and he's doing better. It's complicated, when you're older, isn't it?

I have some thoughts on ageing and caring and what care looks like and how that could be extrapolated to the community... but it's nearly 21.30 and it has been a long day. I'll post on the weekend.

Meanwhile I was able to take the day out of work with carer's leave and it is those kinds of things that are good about salaried employment. My workplace might be a chaotic mess right now but getting paid time off to care for my family is a plus.

Supporting countries to ensure the continuum of integrated care for older people

"...importance of delivering personalised, comprehensive, coordinated #care to older people, supporting a shift from traditional disease-oriented approach towards more holistic care..."

"...ICOPE is consistent with and based on the large body of evidence built by geriatricians over the past decades..."

My 80y/o father-in-law is staying with us for a couple of days. Having him over is like having a 2nd kid under 10 in the house.

Between him and my 7y/o daughter, it's like a circus trying to keep them out of trouble. They are both so curious and yet both lack the appropriate physical / motor skills 😅
