The WH clarified that the 125% tariff rate on #China is in addition to Trump’s previous 20% tariff on China for its role in supplying #fentanyl & fentanyl precursors. So Trump has added #tariffs of 145% to China since coming into office.

This is on top of levies Trump put on China in his 1st term, which ranged up to 25% They also go on top of other tariffs the US has put on Chinese products for violating #trade rules, as well as Trump’s #tariffs on #steel, #aluminum & #cars.

Some facts about the #economy - The #WhiteHouse says the 25% #tariff on goods from #Canada and #Mexico will stay in place. #EuropeanUnion #EU officials have approved a new round of #retaliatory #tariffs on U.S. goods. Starting as soon as April 15, the tariffs—ranging from 10% to 25%—will apply to over $24 billion worth of products, including #tobacco, #motorcycles, #poultry, #steel, and #aluminum. #trump announced on #TruthSocial that #maga should buy stock this morning - we did not see that!

🔋Improving Aluminium-Ion Batteries with Aluminium-Fluoride Salt.

There are many rechargeable battery chemistries, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Currently lithium-ion and similar [e.g. Li-Po] rule the roost due to their high energy density at least acceptable number of recharge cycles, but aluminium-ion [Al-ion] may become a more viable competitor.

A published paper by Chinese researchers claims to have overcome some of the biggest hurdles. In the paper as published in ACS Central Science by [Ke Guo] et al. the use of solid-state electrolyte, a charge cycle endurance beating LiFePO4 (LFP) and excellent recyclability are claimed. <https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acscentsci.4c01615> It’s been known for a while that theoretically Al-ion batteries can be superior to Li-ion in terms of energy density, but the difficulty lies in the electrolyte, including its interface with the electrodes. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium-ion_battery>
[ImageSource: ACS Central Science] The newly developed electrolyte (F-SSAF) uses aluminium-fluoride (AlF3) to provide a reliable interface between the aluminium and carbon electrodes, with the prototype cell demonstrating 10,000 cycles with very little cell degradation. Here the AlF3 provides the framework for the EMIC-AlCl3 electrolyte. FEC (fluoroethylene carbonate) is introduced to resolve electrolyte-electrode interface issues. A recovery of >80% of the AlF3 during a recycling phase is also claimed, which for a prototype seems to be a good start. Of course, as the authors note in their conclusion, other frameworks than AlF3 are still to be investigated, but this study brings Al-ion batteries a little bit closer to that ever-elusive step of commercialization and dislodging Li-ion.

…The levies #Trump announced on Wed are separate from the ones he has already imposed on #steel, #aluminum, & foreign-made #cars & parts. Taken as a whole, his tariffs represent a dramatic expansion from the more narrowly targeted duties he imposed in his first term—some of which the Biden Admin retained—& a final nail in the coffin for the open #trading environment that reigned before 2016.
