here’s tangential mini-thread i wrote about how Wisconsin was one of the big stories of 2011 during the #ArabSpring and how without Winconsin’s #Walkerville, there would have never been a #Bloombergville nor an #OccupyWallStreet.

His mother has been on hungerstrike for her son's release for over 100 days, and is now in a critical condition. An Australian journalist has now joined her to #FreeAlaa as he owes him his life. So it is not ironic or surprising that Turkey is the one that was instrumental in helping #HTS rebels drive #Assad out of Syria into seeking political asylum in Russia.

While #Ukraine remains Russia's top priority, preserving its 2 bases in Syria is next highest.

UPDATE ON UKRAINE, 13 December 2024 INTELLIGENCE UPDATE + Russian officials almost certainly consider the collapse of the Assad regime, its former Syrian ally, to be both detrimental to its regional strategic interests, and to its image as a security guarantor. + The Russian leadership almost certainly considers the UKRAINE conflict to be their primary concern. Russia’s prioritisation of the Ukraine conflict likely degraded Russia’s ability and capacity to keep the Assad regime in power. + Russia’s primary aim in SYRIA is to maintain control of its military bases - its largest overseas NAVAL BASE at Tartus and its AIRBASE in Khmeimim - to enable Russian strategic access to the Near East and MEDITERRANEAN Sea, supporting its aims in AFRICA and allowing for military power projection. The collapse of the Assad regime has almost certainly increased the risk to the security of these assets + In the short term, Russia will highly likely seek to repair its reputation as a reliable partner and engage diplomatically with all relevant actors involved, in efforts to ensure security guarantees for its military bases.

Today I was reminded of Egypt's Tahrir Square event by #Maddow pointing out that #AymanMohyeldin was reporting for Al Jaz at the time....but also reminded that #MonaEltahawy #monaeltahawy.bsky.social was someone I was avidly following on the dead bird site at the time, but I also know she's gay, so I hope she's moved offshore somewhere before the Trumpanzees take over. Egypt's developments are something the US should have learned from in terms of the method that Trump used to get on the GOP ballot in the first place. For both the GOP and Egypt, a plurality of votes was set as equal to a majority when it is NOT.

I grew up in a family with a history of resistance during the German occupation of the Netherlands in WW2. I lived with and discussed for many days with people that were in the resistance against the East German regime while studying in Dresden. I spent time with people fighting for #ArabSpring at Tahrir square in Cairo. One lesson is universal. Avoid risk by never having a central collection of information that could be found. Be it paper, audio recording or digital data outside of your control

Just started “Character Limit: How Elon Musk Destroyed #Twitter” by Kate Conger and Eyan Mac. It’s been 2 years since I downloaded my account to retain the references and links; though I haven’t closed it completely, I haven’t been back. I had thought EM had acquired it to destroy grass roots ability to organize, especially #BLM and #ArabSpring as well as further misogyny. It’s the kind of journalism, seemingly anecdotal, that I find difficult to read. Heard authors on KBCS, kind of interesting.

a prominent one immediately preceded the arab spring and might have inspired it:

i would like to have hope, but it's quite grim in iran. they don't have a problem viciously brutalizing their own people
