@cwebber, are you are familiar w/ this #ThisAmericanLife segment?… thisamericanlife.org/516/stuck
…Since I heard the above ≈10 yrs ago, I've been annoyed ∄ a searchable database of known hold music (no, I won't use Google or Alexa).

Another thing I ponder on hold:
When I hear #GPL'd clips that are clearly Allison Smith's voice¹ from #Asterisk, I ponder if playing them to me is distribution & thus #copyleft violation.

Hey #asterisk and #PSTN nerds, does anybody know of a way of selectivly denying calls based on what CLEC an incoming caller belongs to? Looking to deny calls coming from a specific VOIP provider that is spam/scammy. Ex: 617-516-7000 listed under npanxxsource.com/ is T-Mobile for the carrier

Yes, I know numbers can be ported around, I don't care about that level of granularity.

Thanks to everyone who participated in my last poll on open-source PBX solutions! The overwhelming winner was Asterisk, with 91% of the vote.

Now, because I love the fact that this is a place where I can ask a telephony question and actual get responses, I’d like to dig a little deeper: If you were setting up a hobbyist Asterisk-based PBX, which solution would you choose?

I’m limited to five options, so this time, I’m including pure Asterisk as well as four popular Asterisk-based solutions.

Vote below, and if you have another favorite Asterisk-based solution, let me know in the comments!

i have a lot of "retro" PCs from what I consider golden era (saying that means I am retro too as for me this was 90s) that have dial-up modems. I also have phone wires to all rooms in my apartment and (now not) unused Grandstream ATA so I spent day off today setting up dialin ppp server on my #OpenWRT router already running #asterisk

@fredposner been using #Asterisk and #FreePBX (as well as Trixbox and Elastix) at work since 2008, even then often felt #FOSS bits (especially for smaller users) were "crumbs from the table", at best the Katzentisch, - and many involved trying to commercialise / enshittify distros without even bothering to support markets outside USA treated as "edge cases". That said it does work, and is still cheaper and more powerful than per user hosted services..

Okay, type splatters, the beautiful blue book "Glyph* a visual exploration of the punctuation marks and other typographic symbols" avers that "the original shape of the asterisk was seven armed". Of course there's no reference for this claim, and i haven't been able to find one. Does anyone here know of a seven-armed asterisk?

Please boost.

First *real* benefit on the way to #IPv6only! 🕺

Back when I setup my #asterisk, my #ISP didn't let me register unless I used an address obtained from the ISP. I'm using tunneled #IPv6 (HE tunnelbroker) for reasons, so, this forced me to use #SIP via #IPv4.

I just rechecked: registration now works just fine from any address! Things I could remove:

- some hacky scripting to place my public IPv4 address into asterisk's config, by having #ppp call a script remotely via ssh 🙈
- two pf rdr (redirect) rules to route all sip/rtp traffic arriving on the public v4 address towards my host running asterisk.

Yeah, exactly what I hoped for, simplifying network setup step by step. 😎

Tonight I've been playing with the #NortelBCM50, #Asterisk and a bunch of modems. First problem: going through Asterisk and onto the Cisco VG202 nets me a failed modem handshake. So what's going on here?
Modems in play are a Diamond SpeedStar 56k originating from a BCM50 analog port, and a Olinet V92 modem answering on the VG202.
