Candy Fair

A friend of mine had a beautiful drawing pinned near her front door that served as a “Guardian of the House”, and I loved the idea of having a small, #handmade amulet to protect our home when we're away.

For this piece, I used #bronze clay for the head and #Miyuki glass #beads woven together on a small loom. The pattern on the bead band is inspired by an Icelandic magical stave, or "galdrastafir", which is said to symbolize protection.

Here's my progress so far, along with the original sketch in my #sketchbook when I was considering making it completely in bronze.

Open du Port de la Lune, day two - saber and sword and buckler. In the saber group I lost only once, most narrowly 6:7, and won in the other three bouts. I advanced to the elimination where I won in the first round, but in the next one (top 8) I lost.
In the sword and buckler group I also lost once, and won twice. In the elimination, to which 8 of 12 fighters advanced, I won in the first round, then I lost in the semifinal. In the very last fight, I was able to win, claiming the bronze medal 🥉. Unless I remember incorrectly, this is my first medal for sword and buckler.
Congratulations to Batesta Bordeaux for a well organised tournament, especially considering this was the first time 👏

Continuing the 2008 trip to China, a short walk from Tiananmen Square brought us to the Forbidden City which we walked the length of with our guide pointing out the halls and palaces along the way. Pictured is one of a pair of bronze lion sculptures guarding the Gate of Supreme Harmony. The lion cub under the paw symbolises abundant offspring for the emperor and indicates this lion is female. The lion on the other side had a globe under its paw, and was male, signifying rule over the world.

A blue sky with very faint, hazy clouds forms the backdrop to a complex of imperial Chinese temples and other buildings. Sweeping roofs of orange tiles run along one building and appear on tiers of a closer building to the right over its red-orange terracotta walls and bright red pillars. Wide, white stone steps lead up to this nearest building but our view is directed at the bronze sculpture of a bronze lion showing plenty signs of natural patination changing it to a dull, mottled green, which stands guard at one side of the steps. It's very ornate, with thick curls of mane that would suggest a male lion to western eyes even though it's actually a female representation; a thick chain of office with hanging orb hangs around the sculpture's neck and chest; under the left front paw there is a small lion cub on its back, held gently in place.
