Secondly: The goal of modern justice systems is behavioral *correction* and *rehabilitation*. In contrast, in these contexts, the person labeled as the perpetrator is often simply excluded for an arbitrary period of time — without any attempt to actually address or work through the misconduct. When that time is up, the perpetrator returns and targets others. No wonder those who see themselves as victims don’t feel safe — neither for themselves nor for the community around them. The opportunity to support both parties in learning and growth is completely missed. An atmosphere of fear develops, because any mistake might lead to exile and (semi-)public shaming.

This contributes to a dynamic where victims leave the community, while perpetrators thrive.

KommunikationsliebeAuthoritarian Notions and Hackspaces Ask yourself as an inhabitant of a hackerspace: how are conflicts solved in the community? If the answer is, that it’s a normal thing, that you deal with small conflicts, middle sized conflicts and big conflicts in a more relaxed way, that in one moment people scream at each other, say things which are abrassive during the conflict, but then a mode of peaceful co-existence can be found and at the end of the day. Everybody goes home and knows that he is respected for who they are as a human being, with all their flaws, then you’ll likely have not an authoritarian community.

The #CCC currently has an arbitration body acting like a judge, as well as an #awareness team, both of which can make decisions — without transparency and based on arbitrary judgment — about who is considered the perpetrator and who the victim, and they seem to believe they have the ability to do so (and the misguided thinking that this would actually *resolve* conflicts and *reduce* violence).

Mediation processes, or even just conversations, are refused. Efforts to create such structures and services are actively blocked and boycotted.

@rami I think the german #CCC mostly solves this problem. Not perfectly, but to a degree where everyone is relatively OK with it. The multi-stage approach combined with a decentralised distribution of vouchers is pretty clever and also very privacy friendly.

It is a very good article up until the end where the "we can't have all three" basically means "ok fuck privacy". That's a really sad conclusion.

More information on how California’s community college system is addressing fraud. Not sure if this is an appropriate next move.

“When Love Adu, a student and board member, tried to enroll at Moorpark College, she said she was unable to verify her identity online, so she had to drive five hours to present her documents in person. Incarcerated students, undocumented students, homeless students and students under 18 all struggle with the current ID verification software, she said. “These proposals would make it harder for students to get the very education that we’re trying to serve to them.””
