"I don’t like self-service. It sounds dirty. Plus, I’m no good at it. I learned that years ago, the first time I encountered an unstaffed pay station in a parking lot." - Read Monitor essayist Murr Brewster's rage against the self-service checkout. #shopping #checkout #automation

The Christian Science Monitor · Rage against the (checkout) machine: Why I won't do self-service with a smileBy Murr Brewster

I used to be a cashier for a busy grocery store. Most people have a basic understanding of how the conveyer belt at the checkout counter works. But a few people missed that memo. Usually, if someone wasn't placing their goods on the moving belt, I'd switch it off. But one time, as I bagged up the preceding customer's groceries, I decided to leave it on to see what the next customer would do.

Rather than put a single thing on the moving conveyer belt, they balanced a cart full of groceries on the little ledge that separates the conveyer belt from where they stood. The precarious wall of groceries was impressively tall. They managed to balance eggs, bread, canned goods, and even a bag of potatoes on that no man's land.
