The splintering continues. I needed some extra-long fence posts (2.6 m), and during the fencing work, I discovered that sharpened posts are easier and faster to drive into the humus-rich, root-filled forest soil compared dig in the blunt ones that need to be wedged in with stones. Wedging works better on rocky or stony ground. Round posts hold better in the soil than square ones, and over time, roots can wrap around them more easily, providing extra stability.

Last week, we took down a single #larch log from a windthrow like in good old times. I’m really pleased with the yield of fence posts from that tree. We cut the first three lengths into quarters using our bandsaw (woodland mill), halved another three with my chainsaw, left two lengths round, and cut the rest of the top into firewood.
The posts are between 2.2 and 2.4 meters long—solid and just the right size. Over the past week, I’ve been chopping away the sapwood with an axe. Definitely saved myself a trip to the gym with that one!

Strange day here today. A small helicopter spent about 45 minutes just flying randomly above town - not a police #chopper.

But! Speaking of the police, they have an automated gate to their #police station garage.

It was, might still be, broken. A tech spent time this morning trying to get the gate open but left without fixing it.

So the police cars are locked in - or out. Lol.
