"In 2017, Michael Hickson, a 46-year-old disabled Black man in Austin, Texas, developed brain damage and became quadriplegic following a heart attack; in 2020, a court placed Hickson in the guardianship of an outside firm that took charge of his medical decisions.
The firm placed Hickson in a nursing home, where, in May 2020, he contracted Covid. Brought to an Austin-area hospital, Hickson was denied services including mechanical ventilation to help him breathe. At the time, early in the pandemic, 25 states maintained policies around triage procedures that seemingly deprioritized care for disabled people...
Instead, [of good care] Hickson was moved to hospice, where he died on June 11 that year. Hickson’s wife, who wasn’t notified for some 12 hours, alleged in a YouTube video after his death that the court “decided to place temporary guardianship with a company...that had no prior dealings with someone of this complexity.”

Today in Labor History May 7, 1845: Mary Eliza Mahoney was born. She was the first African American to work professionally as a trained nurse. She helped establish the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses. The organization had a big influence on reducing discrimination in the field of nursing. Mahoney was also an activist for both civil rights and women’s suffrage.
'Reverse discrimination' a manufactured crisis
"Earlier this month, the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Ames v. Ohio Department of Youth Services. The case involves a heterosexual white woman who sued her employer under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, arguing that she was demoted and replaced by a gay man and denied promotion in favor of a gay woman. She claims that both positions were awarded to people less qualified than her."

In today’s ruling, the court found that the government’s “abnormal & rapid movement [of Dr. #BadarKhanSuri] across state lines” demanded an exception to the normal jurisdictional rules for the filing of #habeas petitions by a person in government custody in order not to reward the government’s attempt at forum shopping.
“The #Trump administration tried to do the same thing to Mr. #Khalil, Ms. #Ozturk, & Mr. #Mahdawi in order to find a court it believed would be friendlier to its unlawful #detention of people advocating for #Palestinian rights. We are pleased the court saw through the Trump administration’s attempts to manipulate the #law, & we won’t stop fighting until Dr. #KhanSuri is reunited with his family,” Heilman said.
His unlawful arrest & detention are an extreme and unprecedented attack on the #FirstAmendment & part of the #Trump admin’s escalation of attacks against #students & #Palestinian rights advocates.
