Deskbot today is a very special Collaborative effort, the Transformers official mashup with Netflix's smash hit series, Stranger Things, the pizza-delivering Autobot warrior, Code Red!

It is rare I get to gush about a figure, ultra-cynical and grumpy God that I have become, but Code Red is simply a delight from start to finish. He's one of the best Transformers I've bought in absolutely ages, and easily my favourite of the Collab releases so far. I frikkin' love Stranger Things and as we gear up for the release this year of the final fifth season I am delighted to have this amazing piece of dual-parentage memorabilia to call my own. (Triple parentage if you consider pizza itself an Inspiration)(I also adore pizza)

The detail on this fully-licensed toy is superb. Not only that but he nails the Van-to-Robot conversion with such simple and intuitive elan that he makes every Ratchet and Ironhide effort to date look decidedly amateurish (NB: I've not handled the recent Studio Series Core-class versions which could be moar fabulouser - feel free to opine below if you have Thoughts). And he's a Voyager class figure, unlike those stumpy deluxe-class bots. He's actually taller than Grapple, despite representing a far smaller vehicle mode.

Tabbing in robot mode is slightly fiddly, and a touch loose on his back, but that's a tiny demerit among a smorgasbord of lovely tasty toppings.

He makes zero sense in terms of Transformers/Stranger Things Lore fusion. Without IDW around to supply some fiction I've been trying to come up with a wee backstory and character for him but his taking the form of this pizza van from series four of the show makes about as much sense as the original toy Ultra Magnus appearing in the show a year before it was historically released. Why a Pizza Van belonging to a weed-smoking surfer dude, other than the only available iconic vehicle from the show? And you're named after something the kids say to each other in emergencies? Okaaaay, brochacho.

Code Red in fully-licensed "Volkswagen Vanagon" van mode, replete with Surfer Boy emblem on top of the van and textual references written on his side. The door has "Surfer Boy Pizza" in red handwritten font, and below is the company motto: "Delivered HOT to your door". The roof-mount company logo is shaped like a surfboard and also has Surfer Boy Pizza written on it.
The Van from the front, that classic VW logo taking pride of place in the black grille. It also has the text Surfer Boy Pizza emblazoned beneath the windshield. One thing to note here is that the actual vehicle paint applications on the toy are rather simplistic. I'm going to keep an eye out for a Toyhax set although that'll be interesting as Toyhax created themselves a character sheet for a "Code Red" back in the Titans Returns line. Hasbro with the Canon cannon!
The back of the van is a little untidy structurally but this can be forgiven for the little piece of bona-fide engineering magic this toy does to produce the robot mode feet. The text Volksawagon and Vanagon are written here, as they would be on the real vehicle.
Accessories! Code Red comes with three weapons but the presumably Energon-based Axe and "Bat" (I'd call this heavily studded item a Mace, Hasbro) are the two out of three that don't form part of his vehicle mode. There is also a Blast Effect piece for those arty shots of gun fire. And finally there is a tiny to-scale surfer boy pizza box!

Folks, you need to tell me when Stranger Things has happened. I can't be trusted to find out these things for myself: I'm small and easily befuddled.

I have Ectotron (The Ghostbusters car) and Gigawatt (The Back to the Future Delorean) but some of the others have been a bit meh. That Top Gun figure was a bland mess, and the Frankenstein figure, though imaginative and fun, just didn't appeal. Oh yes, and I do also have the X-men homage, X-pense. Sorry, X-panse (he was stupidly over-priced, presumably because of the Marvel License).

I am all over Code Red like mozzarella on tomato sauce, though. What an awesome mash-up and the figure looks really cool too!
