A Eurasian #Coot (Fulica atra), on the point of diving under water to find some juicy pondweed to eat. Or kissing their own reflection. One of those two. I'll let you decide.

Photographed earlier this year at Brandon Marsh in Warwickshire.

A Coot on the surface of a lake, photographed in the process of diving underwater. The front of the body is raised up out of water (at the other end, the tail is submerged), and the short neck is curved so that the head is pointed down. The tip of the bird's beak is just touching the surface of the water, where it meets its reflection. That beak, which is fairly short, is white in colour, with a small white 'shield' extending from the base of the upper part, onto the bird's forehead. The eye is red, with a black pupil, and the head and neck are black. The rest of the body is grey. There are water droplets falling from the briefly-exposed belly, and there are more water droplets from the small splash caused by the back end of the bird being thrust under water.

Their black feathers make them look plain from a distance, but up close you see their weird blue feet, bright green legs, and tiny red eyes. With the bright white beak, it's quite the look.

Short video panning over the #landscape in #Sumapaz #NationalPark, #Colombia. This is around 3,700 m above sea level in one of the largest remaining areas of the #Páramo ecosystem. The swamp in the middle of the scanned area contained lesser #yellowlegs, Andean #teal and American #coot. The surrounding areas held Boyaca #antpitta, Apolinar's #wren, green-throated #helmetcrest, many-striped #canastero and Brazilian #GuineaPigs.
