#MarshMadness day 21
Two little isopods, Lirceus sp. They are not technically from a marsh they are from a spring, but the spring was rather tiny marsh-like so I am counting it.
Right now I am trying to get people to step up for our environment as the public comment period draws to a close on removing the National Environmental Policy Act. This will effectively destroy almost all environment protections in the United States. If you were worried they will destroy the National Parks for profit, rest assured this is the first step. By removing NEPA, they *will be able to*. Easily.
Please, go leave your comment (https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/02/25/2025-03014/removal-of-national-environmental-policy-act-implementing-regulations), call your senators and congress, and keep fighting for nature.

“Kalighat painting, named after the celebrated Hindu goddess Kali, originated from the folk art tradition of rural Bengal.”

A new large predator (#Amphipoda) hidden at hadal depths of the #AtacamaTrench: Johanna Weston et al. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14772000.2024.2416430
"Characterized by darkness and intense pressure, the ocean's #HadalZone seems uninhabitable, yet dozens of unique organisms call it home... A new study highlights one of those species... This #crustacean is the first large, active predatory #amphipod from these extreme depths"
I went for a spring tide swim at Redcliffe Bay, Portishead a month ago and watched the Sand hoppers (Talitrus saltator) living up to their name and hopping & crawling away from the incoming high tide.
I've never seen so many in one spot as there wasn't much beach left for them. They're normally hidden in strandline debris and seaweed and other detritus. Adults spend the winter in a dormant state under the sand.
Taken with my phone
Absolutely massive, lobster-like signal crayfish in the river Misbourne. These species were brought to the UK from North America to be farmed, but have escaped into the wild & infiltrated some of the UK’s wild rivers, where they are pushing out the smaller native species from their habitats.

In honor of California's new official crustacean, we present to you the illustrious #DungenessCrab, beautifully rendered by Fiorella Ikeue
In case you hadn't heard, "California has officially designated three new state symbols, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday. The state now recognizes the #Dungeness crab as its official crustacean, the banana slug as its official slug, and the black abalone as its official seashell."
You can find this particular crab in our new puzzle from Oakland Puzzle Company

"#NewZealand is well known for giant crab #fossils; hundreds of specimens of Tumidocarcinus giganteus have been found... But although this new crab lived at the same time, it was even chunkier: the largest specimen sported an 8-inch carapace & 8-inch claw, making it the biggest #fossil crab ever found"

Surprisingly, these #isopods can be seen carrying something more common on the ocean's surface: large pieces of Sargassum #algae. At the surface, Sargassum grows using photosynthesis, forming floating forests"

Atlantic Sand Fiddler Crabs (Leptuca pugilator) were evident in abundance, yesterday, at the west end sanctuary of Jones Beach. I offer a tribute to them and fellow members of the Ocypodidae, arguably one of the most important families in marine wetlands and maybe globally if we consider wetland ecosystem functions. These little guys are known as "ecosystem engineers" because they create habitats for innumerable other species as a result of the physical alterations they make to their environment. Their tunneling provides homes, releases nutrients, and aerates the substrate. They feed on detritus and small organisms, and are critical components of food webs. They are vital to wetland carbon and other biogeochemical cycles. I even saw land-lubber birds like Gray Catbirds enjoying part of a crabmeat salad (since they also love tomatoes).
