This was a successful winter for plant cuttings. Three new grape vines that will replace the shade cloth for the raised beds for all natural shade instead of plastic.
Two pear tree cuttings are on their second pair of leaves. We'll keep one and give one away.
And one of three avocado tree cuttings took. Homegrown avos in Northern California really is a thing, friends, .
In Farsi, we call this Khar Zahre (poison of the donkey), I have no idea why. It's Oleander in English and it comes in different colors. We have them everywhere in south of France. Just like in the south of Iran where I was born.
Picked up a broken branch from the street last spring and put it into a pot.
It rooted and this year it's blooming. I really like it.
I want to do the same with the white and the red ones as well.
Got some new friends at the plant swap today!

Custom grafting is available by donation to the #MaineHeritageOrchard.

In front and at the back on the left are two hardwood cuttings of Catalpa, the Indian bean tree.
They are much too small to support the giant leaves of the mature trees but there are green sprouts on both. Whether they can establish is still uncertain but there is some life there at least. The twigs are very light, like balsa. There is practically no substance to them. It will be a slow process I think.

Other hardwood cuttings have done very well but I was very sceptical about Catalpa, the Indian Bean Tree.
The wood is very lightweight, like balsa, so there is very little substance there. Also, buds break very late. My tree is just starting now.
So I was amazed that all four of the cuttings have tiny green buds. Early days and they may come to nothing but who knows?

The principle of "stick them in the ground and they will grow" worked well with the dormant willow twigs.
Yesterday's photo of the hardwood cuttings put a broad bean centre stage.
These are much more informative.
Early days to make an assessment of the hardwood cuttings but there are seven variegated Weigela and the Physocarpus are showing good growth.
On Tuesday, I lose my beloved #plum tree. I’m going to take some #cuttings even though it’s not ideal as it’s not winter yet. I still have to try for my very very sore heart.
I have sand, potting mix, perlite, rooting hormone… sharp shears. I’d like to try 4-6 cuttings since there’s no second chance. Does anyone have any suggestions? Cuts to make? Stripping bark off bottom?
@tinahardman16 ? (PS I don’t have the #propagation book yet!

basil grew too big so he was trimmed. Then the trimmings winked at me, begged me to put them in a glass of water, and this is the result. Bit longer to grow before they are ready to go in dirt but it just shows you need nothing very special to grow things, only enthusiasm. And I must add my first ever basil plant came from a rather battered pack of fresh cooks ingredients, reduced to clear at a supermarket.
Well running an errand at lunch, I picked up a .monstera adansonii off the Help Me rack.
This poor thing is so rootbound and leggy that there are roots sprouting out of literally every node.
Once I trim it and repot it, I think I could eventually wind up with about a dozen plants.. !
Also, I'm collecting *sticks* already this year, so if there's a Magnolia Tree in your yard.. I'd like a tiny piece or two?
It's easier to root a tree from green portions, but I've got to try everything once.. Roses and Lilac and tropical trees.. even Pomegranate I've re-cloned after growing from seed.
I'm no expert, by a long shot, but there's a lot I've learned in a short while.
Experimenting with some perennial #variegatedkale #cuttings. The parent plant is getting a bit straggly. #gardenersofmastodon
I gave up and tossed everything into a cold start container. What will be will be. Instead, I've decided to go with #cuttings this spring. I love this plant it's so pretty
