Pystynkö ratkaisemaan tämän, mitä erilaisia tapoja on olemassa.

I quit #reddit cold turkey about four months ago after a decade of heavy use.

I wish I could say I'm a zen monster who can focus for 19 hours in a row now, that I can enjoy boredom on the train, that I have learned three new languages...

In reality - I'm slightly more bored, I have lost interest in some hobbies, and I'm not as up to date on certain topics.

Family member was clearing out old stuff and found this old Garmin Asus (A10) phone and honestly... I dig it so bad! Glorious skeuomorphic design.

I ordered a Sim adapter to big old ones, and then Ill try it for a few days to see how it is to daily.

It can.. sort of navigate, only big roads are displayed, but otherwise I hope the battery is still decent.

Will report back end of next week!

Hello, friends. I've been known as "Newfangled" on Twitch and just did a re-brand of my channel. It's now called "Positive Notes" which is the name of both the channel and the show.

I'm no longer calling myself "Newfangled", but using my first given name (Dallin) as the host of my new show. So I figured I'd stop using my Newfangled account over on Universeodon and start using this account that I've had for a while but never used much.

I have been using Mastodon for years across various servers and accounts and really enjoy it. It's how social media is supposed to be. The #fediverse is amazing.

I love #music. Listening, playing musical instruments, and sharing. On my #Twitch program I share good music from my collection and good messages and stories to bring a little joy into people's lives.

I am also interested in #technology, #retro things, and #reading.

Lately I have been renewing my interest in #DigitalMinimalism and #offline things.

I am a #Christian, a disciple of Jesus Christ. I try (I fail, but I try) to emulate him - the perfect example of love, kindness, and charity.

I am interested in #nonviolence and #peacebuilding.

Fred Rogers is a personal hero and role model of mine.

I just finished reading Cal Newport's book "Digital Minimalism" and I very much enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

I've already been doing a lot of the suggested practices, but now I want to read the book again, really let the philosophy sink in, and make more changes. I think his approach makes sense and helps to ensure the digital technology in your life isn't using you, but that you are using it with intention to help enrich your life and help you focus on what is most important.

If your New Year's resolution is to spend less time online, 'digital minimalism' may be for you: You've had a break from social media over the holidays, but what about a more permanent reset of your relationship with your devices? These digital minimalists did just that. abc.net.au/news/health/2025-01 #AllintheMind #digitalminimalism #socialmedia

Almost a week into my cold-turkey purge of Meta-owned social media, I’m finding out that a simpler trick has helped me improve my mood and my ability to concentrate:

Turning off all phone app notifications.

It’s like suddenly this thing is a tool that’s there when I want it to be instead of being a constant annoyance factory.

Is There a Duty to Be a Digital Minimalist?

“In this paper, we argue that there is an obligation to foster and safeguard autonomy in ourselves, and we suggest that wireless mobile devices pose a serious threat to our capacity to fulfill this obligation. We defend the existence of an imperfect duty to be a “digital minimalist.” That is, we have a moral obligation to be intentional about how and to what extent we use these devices.”

Just came through this mini #documentary about #dumbphone users. As someone who is on the path to switch to #digitalminimalism in the long term (after some shorter experiments), it's good to see other people's thoughts about this topic.

My primary goal currently is that I want to reduce the purpose of my #smartphone to be used as an LTE-enabled tablet to be a tool in my backpack for emergencies, and point-and-shoot #photography device in case I see something interesting.

Instead, I'll use a #flipphone and a dedicated #MP3Player when I'm on the go. For communication, I'll use a smartwatch tethered to my smartphone and type answers on it only when it's necessary. Otherwise, I'll just let myself be bored and inspired, looking around myself.

I also got a cool #Linux based #RetroGaming #handheld #console, so that, my #ebook reader and video essays on #YouTube will be my entertainment.

I know, this sounds a lot. However, multiple single-purpose devices make more sense in the grand scheme of things. They make you more conscious about your digital life and condition you to live more, be more present. They also last more battery-wise, which is a huge bonus!

Especially now, when the world is on fire, I think this became more important than ever before. Time for a change for the better!

One aspect of Mastodon/ActivityPub that I really enjoy is that, due to posts slowly reaching smaller instances and people like me catching up with their timelines every few days, you often have people interacting with content days or even weeks after it was originally posted. The slooooowwwww aspect of the whole thing is brilliant.

Honestly, we should normalise interacting with older posts.

"POSSE is a fine idea and I appreciate prioritizing your home, wherever that might be. Posting here is a given, but for me, it’s the syndication piece that needs to stop. I am not a brand. I am just a person jotting down thoughts and casting them out into the ether. I shouldn’t use them as a lure, and that’s what syndication, even only to Mastodon, feels like to me right now. There’s a pull that I need to break away from, a growing urge to generate better attractions; maybe I should be writing about a popular topic? Am I a waste of space for not finding my niche and leaning in? Why did that phrase—lean in— even come to mind? Suddenly, I’m careening down corporate avenue, looking for ways to optimize my reach, absolute madness and reason unbeknownst to me."

I feel like one of the important things to notice and use in how I’m learning to live a healthier digital life is to determine if a technology is enveloping or enveloped—so if a tech forces me into its realm rather than being a useful tool in *my* realm, it’s to be avoided or tightly controlled from my end. The former is not all bad—a book does that, too—but it’s too easy to become enveloped in systems that serve business but not the soul.

I cannot stress enough how much better my YouTube experience has been since I disabled watch history.

No more endless hours wasted down a YouTube rabbit hole of recommended content. No more right wing/flat earth recommendations out of nowhere. No more annoying YouTube Shorts clogging up my mobile app. Still able to manually search topics to get related videos & browse my subscriptions for new videos.
