I am driven by my emotions.

"Our opinions generally have emotional rather than intellectual roots, and indeed rationality largely functions as a post hoc justification. Our political opinions, ultimately, are what we feel about the world, not what we think about it. And in turn, our opinions about particular events have a lot to do with how we feel about the world in general. It’s not an exaggeration to say that most people’s views about the kind of things that happen today are extensions of concerns of their own ego. And consequently, invitations to change their minds because new facts emerge, or because old ideas are discredited by new evidence, are in fact a threat to the strength and even survival of that ego."

"But few people, especially those who have received a decent education, want to acknowledge that their views are based on emotion and not reason. They therefore try to argue".

There Will Come Soft Rains

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white,

Robins will wear their feathery fire
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.

Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If mankind perished utterly;

And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone.

I know that there are no Canadian parties that even come close to #representing my #views. Perhaps you feel the same, and think that makes you a #freak, or so far away from the median that you can't reveal your actual views.

You're not a freak. 96% of the #political #landscape has no Canadian party representing it at all.

I think this is why so many people - a large #majority, I think - suffer from #political #disillusionment in #Canada.

Oh North Korea, hear tales of a man
Who seeks refuge from the American plan
A soldier whose eyes are now open wide
Realizing he must seek a place to hide
He seeks peace and a place to call his own
In your country he hopes to call home

We're re-watching the older #StarWars movies and just finished II: Attack of the Clones. While even as a teenager I realized that the Empire was clearly fascist and modeled after some combination of Rome and the Nazis (among others, perhaps), I'd never realized how horrible the younger #Kenobi was and what a #cult the #Jedi were -

"You can love only us - no family connections, no looking out for anyone not in our elite club, no feeling anything we don't teach you to feel - and if you show any individuality, we will belittle and chide you until you have no choice but to go apostate."

Seriously, I was rooting for Anakin by halfway through the film.

A shadow of growing despotism lurks over Turkey’s elections

#Erdogan's sagging popularity ahead of Turkey’s #May 14 #elections attests to many Turks’ #disillusionment with the highly #personalized #autocracy Mr. Erdogan has constructed, built on #repression, the #subjugation of dissenting views and once-independent institutions, and a deepening #contempt for human rights and democratic norms.

Mr. Erdogan’s colossal #mismanagement of Turkey’s economy, one of the world’s 20 biggest, has eroded living standards, decimated the #Turkish lira’s value and sent #inflation soaring.

Little wonder so many Turks are angry; his opponent, a colorless former bureaucrat, leads in the polls.

The elections are also a test of the capacity of democratic elections to throw off the yoke of his increasingly one-man rule in a country of 85 million people.

The stakes could hardly be higher, first and foremost for Turks themselves, who might justifiably worry that #authoritarianism would yield to dictatorship if Mr. Erdogan won another term, but also for Washington and its European allies
