@jynersolives That is as true as it is only part of the truth. The world order is reorganizing itself, especially since the disruptive reorganization of the West. #Europe must now decide whether it wants to play in the concert of #empires or strengthen international law as a force for peace. #Military spending must be viewed critically against this backdrop. Defense yes, out-of-area operations no!

European Empires From Conquest to Collapse, 1815-1960 by V.G. Kiernan, 2024

New edition of a trail-blazing history of imperial warfare.

Victor Kiernan offers a ground-breaking, truly global history of the violence of empire. European Empires from Conquest to Collapse deftly surveys the fighting forces and military engagements of the Great Powers, from the British in India to the scramble for Africa.

All Empires Decline Eventually

#American #decline is inevitable, not just real. All powers are subject to adjustment and stagnation.

For one thing, #empires need #emperors. #Trump’s earliest executive orders testify far more to the desire to be powerful, and exude power, than to any credible policy agenda that could achieve the restorationism he so clearly desires.

It is a fool’s errand to reverse any empire’s relative decline, and rank immorality to try.

Imperial violence

"Imperial conquest and colonization depended on pervasive raiding, slaving, and plunder. European empires amassed global power by asserting a right to use unilateral force at their discretion. They Called It Peace is a panoramic history of how these routines of violence remapped the contours of empire and reordered the world from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries."

The book "brings vividly to life a world in which warmongers portrayed themselves as peacemakers and Europeans imagined “small” violence as essential to imperial rule and global order."

A really interesting discussion of the similarities between the late stages of the Roman Empire before it's collapse and the American Empire (including it's EU protectorate) recent decline from the position of global hegemon. #uselection #uspol #eu #empires #china #india

A United States of Europe

A free and unified Europe was first imagined by Italian radicals in the 19th century. Could we yet see their dream made real?

Our RTG is very honoured to have Professor Carolyn J. Eichner from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee as a guest this week.
As part of our colloquium, she will present one of her current projects, "Marked by the State: French Jews, Algerian Muslims, and the Surname”. Since this is a rare opportunity for a German audience to meet a professor, we are opening the talk to the public.
