Ariana Bindman: #Butterfly once thought to be locally extinct emerges in San Francisco neighborhood
Prior to our arrival, they dominated Northern California’s coastal landscape

"These coastal green hairstreak butterflies, also known as the 'jewels of the Inner Sunset,' were once thought to be extinct in San Francisco due to habitat loss and invasive plants…"

Helmeted honeyeaters, one of Australia’s most endangered birds, received a population boost with 26 new birds released from Healesville Sanctuary into Cardinia Creek, Victoria. These beautiful yellow-tufted birds, part of a 35-year rescue program, were carefully bred. With only 280 left in the wild, every bird counts in saving Victoria’s bird emblem from extinction.

"We're a biodiversity hotspot, but we won't be if we cover the whole of it in suburbia."

"If you're putting roads through koala habitat, you see more car strikes.

If you're building houses in there, you get more dog attacks,

and ultimately also the more koalas are compressed, you see higher stress in the population, and that results in less resilience and greater disease."

"The science is clear. We need to [be building] up, not out. The most important thing councils can do is protect the habitat that's there and be involved in restoring areas."

A Belalanda chameleon in Madagascar, where researchers found a small group of the critically endangered animal where it had never been previously recorded. Among the world’s rarest reptiles, the Belalanda chameleon has one of the most restricted ranges of any animal – roughly 4 sq km – and most of its forest habitat has been destroyed.

Trump Officials Ask Court to End Protections for a Strutting, Showy Bird

The Trump administration has moved to end federal protections for the lesser prairie chicken, a showy grouse with the misfortune of inhabiting southern and central grasslands long sought-after for agriculture and energy development.
In a court filing on Wednesday, officials said the Fish and Wildlife Service had erred in a Biden-era decision that placed the bird on the endangered species list.

Researchers estimate that lesser prairie chickens have declined from hundreds of thousands or even millions to about 30,000 today. Habitat loss is the main culprit.

The road that will eat the grassland earless dragon's habitat

"The fight for the lizard has recently been drawn into the public's focus as environmentalists express concerns the construction of a new road at Canberra Airport cuts straight through the dragon's habitat."

USA Endangered Species Act changes.

Consider sending a brief letter to Gina Shultz, acting Assistant Director of Ecological Services at the email below requesting an extension to the comment period. The request must be in writing at least 10 days prior to deadline. Simply emphasize the scope and gravity of the proposed ESA changes and the corresponding need for sufficient time to consider impacts and comment.

Her email address is ADEcologicalServices@fws.gov

To anyone interested, this is a comment form about the recent proposition about changing the definition of “harm” in the endangered species act… an acquaintance of mine shared this with me… I think it’s only 10 days left to comment, so please share with anyone you know or is interested 🩷🌎🩷
