With Oil prices crashing — putting expensive US/Canadian oil supply at risk — and tariff hit consumers likely causing a recession in the world’s largest economies, could Donald Trump be the best thing to happen for CO2 emissions, and the transition to renewables, since the pandemic?

Only if the rest of the (sane) world takes the opportunity to double down on renewable energy.

Just to get an idea of the scale of the disaster this *one* LNG terminal represents:

If built to capacity, this facility will export up to 28 Million Tonnes of LNG per year.

It is expected to produce 0.15 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of LNG. (source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LNG_Cana)

That's 4.2 Million tonnes of CO2 per year.

BC's total emissions in 2022 were 65.5 million tonnes.

So this one facility will increase by 6% the total CO2 emissions of the province. Meanwhile, that doesn't count the CO2 of the exported LNG itself when it is used.

I guess the rest of us just have to work harder at reducing emissions so the poor LNG company (Shell et al) can have their profits!

Good people, including many Indigenous people, tried to stop this environmental, climate, disaster from happening.

They failed.

It has been proven in multiple studies that the use of Natural Gas today generally displaces renewables and nuclear, particularly in China and other Asian countries. This will likely be true in Europe as well.

I don't know if #TheAmericanFascist's trade war will make LNG more or less viable, but I know that billions of dollars invested in this disaster could have gone to renewables in BC and given us more leverage in the energy and water war that is coming.

We will regret building this monstrosity.

More failure on the fossil fuel front from Colorado ...

The document did not mention oil and gas extraction or automobile exhaust, leading to criticism from environmentalists...

“This is about our burning of fossil fuels and about our extracting of fossil fuels,” Tafoya said. “The only way we are going to clean up our air is to turn away from burning this stuff that pollutes our air.”
