Why?</p></blockquote><p>I write in 1st person. The narrator is the POV. The reader gets to experience a continuous description of what is important enough for the POV to notice, what they are willing to report doing, what they want you to know about what people are saying and doing—and <em>especially</em> what they think about it. It is a stream of thoughts and reactions, often presented with snark or filtered by worry, and if the reader pays attention, spun in subtle ways to fit the MC's agenda. Sometimes my characters even quote their own thoughts!</p><p>Here's what it looks like in practice from the POV of the devil-girl in <em><u>Reluctant Prizefighter</u></em>. She's been wolf-whistled by a street gang member, but she has some defense training and has subtly dodged his grabs, but has verbally and physically bruised him. <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/excerpt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>excerpt</span></a></p><blockquote><p>I hadn't learned yet how to reliably work the miracle I'd created defeating <em>The Monster.</em> Was this miscreant the one who might help me break through?</p><p>I looked at how his muscles moved, his legs and rear when he turned momentarily to retort to a gang mate, how he held himself erect—</p><p>I blinked. <em>He had dimples!?</em> Arguably cute, and not enough of a threat, nor cute enough to sway me either. I turned and walked on, trying not to grin, saying, "I doubt it."</p><p>"Doubt what?" I heard his shoes catching up.</p><p>"I thought you might teach me <em>something."</em> I gave him, his not exactly scrawny body, more of a dismissive look than it deserved. "I was mistaken" <em>that you're sufficiently threatening to help me.</em></p><p>He sped to cross my path, but I must have intimidated him; he didn't block me. I took a much better look at his rear end. Squarish. Muscular above the hip, too. I rather liked the view, but now he'd turned red and I had to look up at his angry eyes. My hit struck home.</p><p>He asked, "What are you? <em>Spurs?</em> Or <em>2nd Street Fist Gang?"</em></p><p>"What are you? Besides rude?"</p><p>"NGG Syndicate. We <em>all</em> are." He pointed to his shoulder, and lifted a sweaty sleeve. Hiding what he revealed might be the whole purpose to him wearing the t-shirt.</p><p>"Wow. You <em>let</em> someone brand you!" <em>How stupid can you get?</em> It read NNGS in cursive, burnt into his skin with either a wire pattern heated by fire, or by an application of reluctance, but reluctant force would require him to absolutely trust the miracle worker—which might be the point! <em>Still foolish.</em> The scar was pink; the hair had only partially grown back. I didn't want to shudder, but did so anyway.</p><p>He added,"You're going to regret trespassing—"</p></blockquote><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/mystery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mystery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/thriller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>thriller</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/romance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>romance</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSReluctanceStory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSReluctanceStory</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/microfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>microfiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/flashfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flashfiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/tootfic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tootfic</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/smallstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>smallstory</span></a></p>

"I followed you! And reintroduced myself to popup tent cuisine. Must've been a half dozen years since I frequented my city's angelic rooftop food courts. When you finished your snack, I swooped down and announced that I wanted chefs to compete to guest in my kitchen. Two of the least timorous volunteered, Chili Feathers and Flying Fish Flavor-wright. I hope you appreciate their effort!"</p><p>A dish of charred crawfish clinked down before me on translucent lavender porcelain, surrounded by steaming sautéed peppers and squash in a chunky hot sauce. I didn't even look up to see what Thorn got. I heard her delighted eating sounds, though, and smelled cumin and garlic. That was only the first course! What can I say? What's more delightful than salty, vinegary, garlicky, peppery, often breaded, vaguely greasy vegetables and fish? A whole fish, split and crinkly fried, overflowed Rainy Day's plate. Generally vegetarian Thorn ignored the smell and toasted eyes as the two gabbed about a scientific discoveries way too esoteric for me. With all this attention from a teacher, from the world's <em>most exclusive</em> teacher, Thorn's ego soared in the stratosphere, maybe higher; were Rainy Days to suggest that they get passionate, she would have gladly consented, simultaneously combining riding and talking science with a creative flare only my brainy friend concoct. Seeing Thorn happy inscrutably made me <em>glow</em> inside.</p><p>Thorn Rose was a perfect fit for Rainy Day's Academy of Thaumaturgy. Me? Not so much.</p><p>Dessert, fried dough balls filled with candied pickles and frosted with deep magenta rock-beet-sugar left me feeling particularly pleased and patting my stomach, and maybe feeling a bit sleepy. I sat there, ignoring everything. Some great male protector, was I, of the devil-girl in my charge! I rolled a toothpick between my thumb and forefinger, thinking that this day could not get much weirder.</p><p>I missed the silence until Rainy Days said, "Day Angel Carryingaton?"</p><p>My hands slapped down on the table, and WHO knows where the toothpick went!</p></blockquote><p>This scene takes place before yesterday's 2025.06.21 entry.</p><p>=-=-=-=-=-=-=<br>† Yes, that's a programmer joke. 😋</p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/mystery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mystery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/thriller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>thriller</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/romance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>romance</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSReluctanceStory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSReluctanceStory</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/microfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>microfiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/flashfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flashfiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/tootfic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tootfic</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/smallstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>smallstory</span></a></p>

Before he could set his mind on revenge for me having surprised him awake mid-night for our second session, I grabbed our shower wet towels, got my school books packed, and threw open the windows. My room was high in our treehouse. </p><p>"Breakfast," I declared, crouched as if I, a wingless daemon, would dive into the air. </p><p>The instant I sprung, my day angel friend grabbed my waist as he flew past into the sky. With a toss as he flapped hard, he got his arms under my knees and back. I nuzzled his chest.</p><p>Soon, under a sky filled with orange painted clouds, seated in a bustling day angel rooftop food court, I slurped noodles. Rude not to slurp loudly, but they were hot; I dripped salty fish broth that glistened with golden globules. I finally grabbed for a napkin, fanning my hand at my mouth at the heat; redolent of horseradish, it was peppery too—as if I could fan that away! I huffed and chewed as Streak patted his pockets, then reached into his book bag. I wiped oil from my chin as he found the something and struggled to lift my next slippery glassy noodles in the air to cool.</p><p>Pictures of him… and another woman. Time - Non officielTornadoes can tear down a home and hurricanes can flood entire towns. But when it comes to weather dangers, extreme heat is the great deceiver. Streak asked gently. Always gentle, a good man indeed.</p><p>I looked steadfastly up at the stars. I'd had him fly me away from Home City to the edge of the nearest forest of the Wild, the Woodsea, to ensure quiet and a dark sky.</p><p>I glanced east and shivered. Night shine rose over the tops of the tall trees, bright blue white. I shivered and looked steadfastly up again. A wind in the trees rustled leaves, then quieted, then rustled and clattered again a few moments later. </p><p>I put a hand on his mouth, and looked at my loaner wrist chronometer. Digits glowed faintly green, as did the heartbeat. <em>Radium</em> not thaumlight, I'd learned. Totally mechanical, totally accurate to the heartbeat. I took a deep breath. "I taught you constellations. Do you see the Boxes and the Star Ribbon?"</p><p>I looked south. He followed my gaze. "Three bright blue stars?"</p><p>"The ones. Keep looking."</p><p>"For how long—?"</p><p>Where previously there'd been darkness between the three brilliant blue stars, red flared like a spark off a log in the fireplace, rising, rising toward the zenith.</p><p>It multiplied. Like a rabbit, it multiplied and multiplied. Flare after flare, mostly red, but some orange, and one very <em>very</em> blue—as if one of the Ribbon stars had fallen, but it hadn't. Trails developed behind. I knew the truth. Something <em>orbited</em> Home had entered the atmosphere obliquely. Its shape, flat, might have caused it to skip like a shingle rock on a lake, but Rainy Days had said, no, it wouldn't do that.</p><p>She could track it precisely with the weather service. Had for days. I'd just <em>learned</em> she could do that.</p><p>More and more flares followed as they flew until they crested the zenith. One flare exploded, briefly blinding. A spreading cloud of red continued on the path downward. The display of tailed stars soon crossed the orb of night shine and disappeared behind the Woodsea.</p></blockquote><p>Yes, they stargaze.
