@fuchsiii @grumpygamer oftentimes said cores ain't even "dedicaded" but shared...

  • In the case of #CyberBunker they literally sold #Nehalem(-EX) hardware to customers (cross referenced by datasheets/specsheets and the fact they never updated the listings in 15+ years!)

"shared core VPS" are a very big mistake, espechally on Hosters like #Hetzner...

  • Ask me how I know!

So OFC said systems are overworked, espechally the convenience-based options where one just shoves on files and tells it to "bake it"...

  • OFC it shouldn't be the responsibility of a #GameDev to #DIY one's own #CI / #CD infrastructure, and I think given the size and complexity of said games it would be overkill to do so.

If feasible, just grab' yourself a decently performing PC/Server/Laptop you can chug in a closet, SSH/RDP onto and use it as "build servant" ("Rechenknecht") to run your builds and then sent a notification once done.

Gamedev MastodonRon Gilbert, Esq. (@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place)My desktop machine can fully rebuild the game in a few minutes. Azure takes 20-30 minutes. I'm sure many of these cloud services are using way over worked VMs. I'll deal with it because I don't want to set up and maintain my own machines for building. I have a game to make and CI build machines isn't where I want to spend any effort.

@duckyfella @MaliciousCarp Depends on the exact config and whether or not one just needs a stupid #dlna server (even the OG #RaspberryPi Model B can run minidlna fast enough to stream 1080p video with ease.

  • There should also be some hardware transcoding stuff even on older #AMD Embedded SoCs with Radeon HD graphics.

As for other #Server tasks, the #fanless #ThinClients are perfect for offloading tasks like #Backups, #Filesharing and "#Homelab|bing" aka. doing some "#FuckAroundAndFindOut" - kind of #testing.

I think #Dave2D is a bit too excited about an #ionization-based #SolidStateCooler aka. "#fanless #fan"...

I just think it'll end up in #nieche devices that want to have the option to additionall boost power on a normally #PassiveCooling system to make it a #silent system without relying on convection alone.

Cuz #AirChemistry and #Physics ain't something #Ventiva can innovate themselves out of...

@mvilain @dangillmor @pluralistic yeah...

The only reason I still have my DeskJet 6122 hooked up is because that lil shit refuses to die!

  • Like its glycol ink refuses to clog and it's easy to refill and reset the cartridges...

  • Otherwise I would've already replaced it with a WorkCentre multifunction laser...

Worse are their #ProBook line of #Laptops: They literally "Soft-#VendorLock" their #RAM to #HP-branded sticks, bricking #PXE-boot and requiring people to manually press F1 on the device keyboard EVERY SINGLE BOOTUP / REBOOT with #FUD messages.

  • Unlike with like #WiFi and #WWAN chips where one can figleaf argue that those need allow-listing for "spectrum regulatory compliance", this doesn't apply to RAM!

On the flipside I use a bunch of #fanless hp #ThinClient|s as #MiniServers, but that's because in #Germany #electricity is absurdly expensive and for just doing #backups and #MediaSharing doesn't draw much power...
