The original nonprofit is the controlling shareholder and would have been spun out as an independent entity if OpenAI had succeeded in its efforts. With that change no longer taking place, OpenAI’s investors receive convertible notes that will turn into equity.</p><p>A group of ex-OpenAI employees, Nobel laureates, law professors and civil society organizations sent a letter last month to attorneys general in California and Delaware requesting that they halt the startup’s restructuring efforts out of safety concerns.</p><p>In the letter, which was delivered to OpenAI’s board, the group wrote that restructuring to a for-profit entity would “subvert OpenAI’s charitable purpose,” and “remove nonprofit control and eliminate critical governance safeguards.”</p><p>Page Hedley, OpenAI’s former policy and ethics advisor — and lead organizer of Not For Private Gain, the group that wrote the letter — said in a statement that while it’s a positive step that the company is listening to concerns, “crucial questions remain.” One is around whether OpenAI’s commercial goals will “continue to be legally subordinate to its charitable mission,” and another is, “Who will own the technology that OpenAI develops?” said Hedley, who is lead organizer of the group that wrote the letter.</p><p>Taylor said on the call with reporters that OpenAI’s current structure includes the nonprofit board and subsidiary, but that the nonprofit board is really the sole governing body. Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>Companies are spending billions building lying machines AKA LLMs:</p><p>If the market could pay just a fraction of the gazillions of dollars that they pay to train these Large Language Models to hire journalists, fact checkers, technical writers, editors, there would be much less need from users to rely on LLMs from the beginning. Most of the time, chatbots are solutions looking for problems that, ultimately, only end up creating more (bigger and larger) problems. </p><p>"One recent study showed rates of hallucinations of between 15% and 60% across various models on a benchmark of 60 questions that were easily verifiable relative to easily found CNN source articles that were directly supplied in the exam. Even the best performance (15% hallucination rate) is, relative to an open-book exam with sources supplied, pathetic. That same study reports that, “According to Deloitte, 77% of businesses who joined the study are concerned about AI hallucinations”.</p><p>If I can be blunt, it is an absolute embarrassment that a technology that has collectively cost about half a trillion dollars can’t do something as basic as (reliably) check its output against wikipedia or a CNN article that is handed on a silver plattter. But LLMs still cannot - and on their own may never be able to — reliably do even things that basic.</p><p>LLMs don’t actually know what a nationality, or who Harry Shearer is; they know what words are and they know which words predict which other words in the context of words. They know what kinds of words cluster together in what order. And that’s pretty much it. They don’t operate like you and me. <br>(...)<br>Even though they have surely digested Wikipedia, they can’t reliably stick to what is there (or justify their occasional deviations therefrom). Computers can answer some questions reliably now, for example, and some not, and the graph tells us nothing about which is which or when any specific question will be solved. Or consider songwriting; Dylan wrote some in an afternoon; Leonard Cohen took half a decade on and off to write Hallelujah. Should we average the two figures? Should we sample Dylan songs more heavily because he wrote more of them? Where should songwriting go on the figure? The whole thing strikes us as absurd.</p><p>Finally, the only thing METR looked at was “software tasks”. Software might be very different from other domains, in which case the graph (even it did make sense) might not apply. In the technical paper, the authors actually get this right: they discuss carefully the possibility that the tasks used for testing might not be representative of real-world software engineering tasks. They certainly don't claim that the findings of the paper apply to tasks in general. But the social media posts make that unwarranted leap.</p><p>That giant leap seems especially unwarranted given that there has likely been a lot of recent data augmentation directed towards software benchmarks in particular (where this is feasible). In other domains where direct, verifiable augmentation is less feasible, results might be quite different. (Witness the failed letter ‘r’ labeling task depicted above.)
