#NewZealand #indigenous #Haka

I most confess: this caught my attention trough a react-to-video by Highly Combustible Reacts [HXC} find that out by yourself {JdeB]
A stance to live by:
"we don't own the land. We we belong here we don't own the lien we belong to it and while we hear we are the guardians of that land"
If this sounds familiar, why not live by it.

the Haka:
WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF ACTEAROA
WE HOLD THE KNOWLEDGE OF OUR ANCESTORS
WE STAND PROUD, WE STAND STRONG
WE SEEK THE PATH TO SUCCES
WE CARRY THE LEGASY OF THE FURTURE GENERATIONS
WE ARE THE LAND
THE LAND IS US
HERE WE BELONG
WE WILL RISE TO THE CHALLENGE
ALWAYS
Of course this is an AmericanEnglish translation, it always loses something 😍

I never had ancestors myself. Of course i did, but many things were silenced. On my mother's side: my gandma was a [part] jewish refugee from before the war from Eastern Europe. She was the silent one. On my fathers side: that grandma was telling about the successes 'her husband' had nade before the war. But I got the impression he was rather on the 'meek' side.
So nothing coherent to base myself upon. But I feel Dutch. #StopDutchFascism

" I think it's a spirit that when a haka has done well that's what captures people and they may not be Maori"

Now for this impressive video:

NZ #Rugby Union are reportedly editing out on social media posts the start of #haka in #AllBlacks vs #Italy test also T J Perenara's last game for the ABs to keep racists from smashing their TVs or whatever device they're watching it on. What Perenara says is: "Toitū te mana o te whenua, toitū te mana motuhake, toitū te tiriti o Waitangi" "the sovereignty of the land remains, the sovereignty of the people remains, the #TreatyOfWaitangi #TeTiriti remains". #NZPol

Haka 'goes metal'
This is wonderful - Andre composes viral clips with heavy-metal guitars.
Highlights include:
*ol' Sourdough's solo
*The gallery action (I hadn't seen that before)
*An attack of emotion & pride as you realise there's so much global support for the Tangata Whenua (maybe just me but I feel its incredible)

Time for a #NZPol quiz on protocol on the House Floor of Parliament.

QUESTION: Which action in the NZ House of Parliament do you consider to be worse parliamentary behaviour?

Calling an opposition member "a stupid bitch" (allegedly on multiple occasions)

Performing #haka as tikanga (Māori law) in objection to a bill that changes the meaning of #TeTiritioWaitangi - The founding document of #Aotearoa #NewZealand

In #NZPol far right news; Following #Māori MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke's Parliament #haka going viral around the world inspiring millions of #indigenous & oppressed people, this #NewZealand government has decided the MP needs to be punished as the #colonial #Westminster system of govt must be upheld despite haka being part of tikanga (Māori law) in #aotearoa

1 comment in this reaction video hits hard; Māori people remind her that they didn’t get us all. #ToituTeTiriti

Tens of thousands rally at #NewZealand Parliament against bill to alter #IndigenousRights

An estimated 42,000 people gathered to oppose legislation that would reinterpret a 184-year-old treaty signed between the British and Indigenous #Maori.

Nov. 19, 2024

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — "Tens of thousands of New Zealanders rallied in front of Parliament on Tuesday in one of the country’s largest ever #protests to oppose a bill, which opponents say seeks to dilute the rights of Maori and threatens to set race relations back decades.

"Massive crowds estimated by the police at 42,000 gathered at Parliament, where the #TreatyPrinciplesBill was introduced earlier this month by legislators who want to reinterpret a 184-year-old treaty signed between the British and #IndigenousMaori.

"While the bill lacks enough support to pass, critics see in it a desire to reverse decades of policies that aimed to empower Maori, who make up around 20% of the 5.3 million population but have higher levels of deprivation and incarceration and worse health outcomes than the broader population.

“'I’m here for my grandchildren, my children and for their children,' said #HoanaHadfield from Wellington, who was marching in a protest for the first time.

"'I think it’s important that we keep our #kaupapa, which is our values as Maori and our culture, and it’s a real big thing for us to have #CulturalIdentity.'

"Some people in the crowd were dressed in traditional attire with feathered headgear and cloaks and carried traditional Maori weapons, while others wore T-shirts emblazoned with #ToituTeTiriti (#HonorTheTreaty). Hundreds carried the Maori national flag.

"The protest was preceded by a nine-day march, or #hikoi, that began in the country’s far north, with thousands joining rallies in towns and cities as marchers traveled south on foot and in cars to Wellington.

"Unity and solidarity was spoken about a lot in the rally. #HelmutModlik, a leader in the Ngati Toa tribe, told the crowd that it was too late to divide the country.

“'To those who will divide us, whanau, it is too late. We are already one people,' Modlik said to cheers from those gathered on the lawns of Parliament.
Booming Indigenous Maori '#haka' chants rang out across New Zealand's capital on November 19, as thousands rallied against a conservative proposal accused of stoking racial divisions."

NBC News · Tens of thousands rally at New Zealand Parliament against bill to alter Indigenous rightsBy Reuters

Right, so after some VERY limited news coverage that didn't explain any detail at all -and the viral scene of #Maori MPs doing a #haka in parliament, thousands are now protesting.

So, for us not familiar with #NewZeeland politics, can somebody explain this controversial bill please ? News says it wants to "re-evaluate the founding document" - how ? What is the threat that indigenous people see in the bill, what is it's motivations - and how can we help them oppose said threat ?

🚫no settler comments🚫

I've been wanting to write a post about the response from a lot of settlers to Hana Rawhiti protesting with the Haka in New Zealand parliament the other day. Two things I've noticed:

1. Clips start at the beginning of the Haka, and are missing out where she calls "Kāwana, ka whakamanuwhiritia koe e au!"*
[Government, you exist by my say-so and I hereby revoke your rights!]**

2. Clips are inundated with comments from settlers declaring that they "don't know why, but I always end up sobbing when I see a haka dance!"

And, well I have thoughts about both points.

But I really want to write something about those settler tears are people feeling the dearth of their own culture in the face of a moment of pure and direct connection to Culture , and how you can't expect to have a culture to connect with if all your people have done for hundreds of years is steal, rape, and murder.. but I don't have the energy to argue about it 😆

Followers of NZ news know of the haka in NZ's parliament, focusing on a bill on changing how Aotearoa's Treaty of Waitangi is interpreted.

So first up, a symphony of voices in context –

When #CUNextTuesday #Seymour dares to suggest #Haka Hana has embarrassed #NewZealand by attracting millions of views from around the world of her haka in parliament responding to Act’s unconstitutional treaty principles bill, stating he has people telling him on street corners that they support his bill and appalled by Māori being expressed in a Westminster parliament, tells me Seymour is standing on the wrong st corners.
