The Alberta government has introduced the Compassionate Intervention Act, which enables mandatory addiction treatment and includes new facilities planned for Edmonton and Calgary.

"This bill presents challenges for physicians and patients. The current evidence does not support that the benefits of involuntary treatment outweigh the risks and costs. In addition, there are questions around medical ethics, human rights, social justice, the role of lawyers as gatekeepers to care and potential harms. Many individuals who use substances have experienced significant trauma, and involuntary treatment carries a real risk of re-traumatization. The potential long-term consequences of mandatory care call for a balanced, rights-based approach to ensure ethical and effective addiction treatment." - Alberta Medical Association

A warning if you do take #drugs not to take so much to go "up" and then *more* to come down (so you can sleep and deal with other responsibilities) and beware of interactions between #partydrugs and prescribed #medications - he's not the only early middle aged man to die in this fashion, but as he was famous gets a bit more publicity and his inquest reported in the Press, a lot of the time there's so many fatal ODs to pick from going through HM Coroner they don't even bother to publicise every case..

When I was on birbsite Fiona Measham of the Loop also warned me about the phenomenon of middle aged men keeling over after a weekend binge (often its because they have cleaned up their lives a bit and lost their previous tolerance)

When you talk IRL to people from places you've considered, they remind you that if the place they came from was so great, why are they talking to you in your hometown?

One of those towns that's no longer a Gay Mecca nor progressive, according to tourists, my parents' ex-pat friends, etc, is #SanFrancisco

I've learnt a bit about the old place, which is increasingly becoming a rightwing billionaire city

Mayor Lurie, a rightwing #billionaire from the #Levi'sStrauss family, is anti-poor, anti-homeless. He & leopard-food #MattDorsey (gay rightwing former cop 🐷 & drug addict who hates ProPalestinian protesters & cosplays as a politician, parachuted into Town Hall by pseudo-lib exMayor Breed) diss '#HarmReduction for addicts in favour of 'AbstinenceOnly'

A proč je to důležité?

✨Nižší riziko infekcí a předávkování
✨Levnější než akutní zdravotní péče
✨Most k léčbě pro ty, kteří by jinak zůstali mimo systém

Jsou o prevenci, ochraně zdraví a zvýšení bezpečí ve městech.

a friend and fellow abolitionist and harm reductionist is currently pooling resources for a meeting she organized with women drug users and women involved in drug using spaces in the Philippines this coming may 11-13. they're hoping to create a collective so that they can map challenges, issues, and resources available to them from the community. they need help specifically with childcare because some of the women who are going are going to need additional rooms.

women who use drugs and taking space in the harm reduction and drug policy movement isn't new, but this is the first for the Philippines that they know of where women drug users came to organize together. they also do not have any funding as they are not a non-profit, rather a collective that's grounded in abolition and our resources are mainly coming from out of pockets and fundraising efforts with their community

🖤 If you care about harm reduction, people who use drugs (PWUD), and unhoused community, watch out for these upcoming Ontario Bills.

Bill 6: (previously Bill 242) criminalises people using substances in “public places” and in “structures”; and expands the Trespass to Property Act — a concern for PWUD, unhoused people at encampments, may also be used against various people simply on so-called “private property” — possible penalty includes arrest without warrant, max $10,000 fine, and/or imprisonment — urgent: second reading tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday May 6) will likely be pushed through without little debate.

Bill 10: (schedule 8) penalises residential and commercial (private and non-profit) landlords seen as permitting or participating in drug production or trafficking (including cannabis); and provides for recovery of enforcement costs (extensive $) — a concern for tenants who use drugs, sublet-ers, social housing providers, other social service providers (e.g., shelters, drop-ins, existing/medical centre integrated versions of OPSs/SCSs, etc.), and possibly dispensaries and similar. ola.org/en/legislative-busines

Not sure if that many of todays middle aged would get the Ford Anglia reference - these were already rare when we were young boys!

The doctor would be better off as well as pointing out health risks from #cocaine (which many men don't care about) reminding them its illegal, easily detectable via swabs at roadside #DUI checks, and if you are caught with it in your bloodstream you won't be driving anything for a year or more..
