You may not notice how dark it is in front of you, but I notice how dark the back of you is when your lights aren't really on and I'm coming up on you in a dark dawn downpour. The benefit from motor headlights was not noticed until pedestrians turned into side streets. Here, impenetrable darkness met the walker. The only bright spots were occasional gas lamps in private residences, and these could hardly be termed bright, as their rays did not carry far. “It was the first occasion in the history of motordom,” said a suburban resident, “when I have had a good word to say for motor headlights.
