In London habe ich letzten August einen ganz anderen Umgang mit Behinderung im Allgemeinen, mit nicht sichtbaren Behinderungen und Träger:innen des Sonnenblumenbandes im Besonderen erfahren. Es war eine Wohltat, nicht nur am Flughafen Heathrow, sondern auch in Einkaufszentren, Supermärkten, der U-Bahn und selbst im Nottinghill Carnival.

Wir müssen uns nicht verstecken, wir müssen uns nicht schämen.
Das ist internalisierter Ableismus. Der kann weg.

ScholarWorks@GVSUCommunicative Interventions for Autistic Employees in Academic WorkplacesThis essay provides an autoethnographic account of my experiences as an autistic employee in academia. By examining organizational communication literature on autism in the workplace, I identify some key issues that autistic employees face in academic workplaces. With research finding approximately 85% of autistic individuals are unemployed, and of those who are employed, only 6% are competitively employed in jobs that utilize their educational training and/or professional skill level, current cultural discourses around diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in the workplace provide an opportunity to make organizational challenges for autistic employees more visible. By sharing my own experiences in the workplace, and pairing it with current organizational communication research, I offer four strategic communicative interventions that employers might utilize in managing autistic employees.

On February 18th, 2020 I posted first on Instagram. Two days ago I started Pixelfed and I want to introduce myself.

Italian born and raised, nonno (=grandpa), married to a kind man, raising our grandchildren together. I believe that cooking at home is key to a better life and that being kind to everyone regardless of their provenience and provenance is key to a better world. Love first.

Because of a hidden disability, pain and fatigue are part of my days and part of what I am. I had many surgeries and there will be more. Each day I wake up and wonder, what will I manage to do today? If I do not do something or I cancel a meeting at the last minute it is not because "I do not care" but it is because I have to dose my active time carefully and the little ones have priority.

Cooking is my meditation time. I tell the little ones that cooking is magical and they named me the Emperor of the Kitchen. I enjoy seeing them learning how to make easier dishes for now, and rejoice when they ask questions about how to make a meal healthy while eating everything.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a simple tool for you to voluntarily share that you have a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent – and that you may need a helping hand, understanding, or more time in shops, at work, on transport, or in public spaces.

Globally 1 in 6 of us live with a disability. That is approximately 1.3 billion people.

But while some of us experience a disability that is visible, many have a non-visible condition or experience a combination of both visible and non-visible conditions. These disabilities can be temporary, situational or permanent. They can be neurological, cognitive and neurodevelopmental as well as physical, visual, auditory and include sensory and processing difficulties. They can also be respiratory as well as chronic health conditions such as arthritis and diabetes, chronic pain and sleep disorders.

In a first-of-its-kind move, a popular theme park will offer a discrete way for visitors to alert staff throughout the park that they may need extra help even if their disability isn’t apparent.
Sesame Place Philadelphia said it will be the first theme park to participate in the Hidden #Disabilities #Sunflower program. Staff, known as “ambassadors,” will receive #accessibility training resources.

Yet again I had a strong #migraine at #HeathrowAirport but forgot my green glasses, so sunglasses + pain killers had to suffice!

Very grateful to the lovely chap on border control in #Barcelona Airport who, on seeing my sunflower lanyard, waved me to come to the front of the line. By that point my legs were wobbly and I was feeling decidedly rough so it was _so much_ appreciated that someone took note and did something about the #SunflowerLanyard
