Happy Saturday! Here's a quilted petticoat dating from around 1760-80, sewn by Mary Preston. Nothing is yet known about her, but research is underway!
It's made of silk, wool and linen, and is terrifying to handle because the silk is gently shattering throughout. Happily, the linen lining is super robust and is keeping everything together.
Greensleeves update!
We have silk satin for the "gown..of the grossie green...sleeues of Satten hanging by" described in the song.
Ninya Mikhaila will make the gown, when we've worked out what it looks like...

Bankfield Museum in Halifax had a great exhibition of costumes from Gentleman Jack, and they've put a gentle and brief video tour (to music) up on their Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z8DEN1fl9I
Good morning. If I get out of bed I can have tea but then I have to catch up on my sewing and surely these petticoats will just make themselves if I stay in bed?

Anyone interested in #Fashion #DressAccessories #DressHistory #HistoricalCostume and other #CostumeAndTextiles history, check out the Digital Museum of Dress Accessories. It's relatively new, the people who run it and curate the online exhibits are lovely, and both the website and their Instagram have some fascinating things.
Weather like this makes us appreciate modern conveniences so much!
Imagine dealing with snow in layers of cotton & wool, then hand washing and drying by the open fire.
How would a wool coat (if you could afford one) ever get properly dry from now to March?

I never got reasonable photos of the finished thing that would show all the detail, but it is a pretty glorious ensemble.
The skirt of the riding jacket hides the piecing of the petticoat and it has a million fabric covered buttons. I like the fichu I made for it, it is tiny yellow flowers on a cream background.

To motivate myself to do a tedious part of a new sewing project, place your gaze upon these WIP shots of my 1780s or so Redingote that I sewed entirely by hand.
I was planning to just do the redingote but then figured I could also do a matching petticoat from the scraps of fabric that I cut out because they took the dye unevenly. I managed the entire petticoat with just an unreasonable amount of piecing, and I almost got the stripes to match on it!
