What term do I search for to find a company that does Window Frost Coverings?

Like I want a company to come in and apply vinyl film to our windows that provide privacy from outside foot traffic?

I've found Window companies that do entire windows already frosted. I've found Car tinting companies that apply tinted vinyl to car windows... I'm not finding what exactly I'm looking for.

Yesterday was a long day... at least it was for a retired guy who regularly naps in the afternoons. Early Friday morning, I made the 1.5 hour drive to Innisfil for the house inspection on our new home. After 3 hours, we had a long list of mostly minor issues and a report that deemed the home solid with no major issues. Late last night, we signed the final documents, and we will soon be Innisfilians.

I want to install a pushbutton timer for a bathroom fan, and a dimmer for a bedroom overhead light.

Digging into electrical boxes in our oldish house usually means a surprise or two, and the jobs tend to become unexpectedly larger.

Those following along may recall one ceiling box I changed that had 13 screws holding it in place.

So I tend to expect the unexpected now.

Peter Thiel, billionaire co-founder of PayPal & one of Facebook's earliest investors, has built a fortune spotting economic trends before they explode. He’s also known for his radical, right-wing tech-bro beliefs, support of Trump, & a host of other questionable pursuits. However he gets part of this right: #Rent is too damn high and #HomeOwnership is beyond the reach of most young Americans, already burdened by debt & suffering in (often multiple) low-wage jobs. It sucks. But of course Thiel blames boomers & wealthy older investors. It’s a deflect & distract tactic. An attempt to scapegoat a demographic while deflecting attention from the driving engine of high rents & house prices. Almost 40% of rental units are owned by ‘institutional’ investors, hedge funds & the like. 70% of apartments with over 100 units. It’s not like individual investors with a few units are conspiring nationally to raise rents, but I’ll tell you who can do that: institutional investors. #housing #finance

Yahoo Finance · Billionaire Peter Thiel Warns of a Looming Real Estate 'Catastrophe'—A 'Massive Hit to the Lower Middle Class and Young People' Who Can't Buy HomesBy Jeannine Mancini

A couple nights ago I came home to find the alien and lights in my second story shop window. Was out. I figured it had gotten unplugged, but no, the plug was dead! This floor is basically a storage warehouse, so all the other outlets were behind shelves. I found ONE across the room, crawled under a shelf and -- dead. The ceiling lights are on the same breaker, so that wasn't it. But I was envisioning a broken plug or connection upstream, and
I went through all my old construction photos, pre-drywall, to figure out where the other plugs on the floor and the wires connecting them were located. It appeared the first plug in the run was near the stairs, right above the breaker panel on the first floor.
And that's when I remembered that the first plug on the circuit downstars had a GFI plug that had caused me trouble once before (Ironically, it had been hidden behind a bookcase in my wife's writing office). Was there one on the second floor? If so, it would be that first plug, deep behind a shelf. Also behind a lot of flat things that I'd put BEHIND that shelf.
I pulled out multiple sheets of plywood and perfboard blocking the way, and way behind the shelf, I could just see the plug. Unable to see clearly, I stuck my phone back and took a closeup of the plug with my phone. Yeah, that spoiler picture. Red LED. Poorly marked reset button.
With difficulty I reached back, found the reset by feel, and pushed it. The lights came on! Yay! My fears of an expensive electrician visit were relieved!
The lesson here is, if you're building or remodeling something, TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES during every stage of construction, especially before the drywall and insulation go up. Get clear shots of every interior and exterior wall, and don't forget the ceiling.
Knowing where your studs, rafters, beams, and hidden systems, pipes, wires, ducts, are, can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars later.
Even if you don't understand what you're looking at, you can show them to a professional when they are coming in to aid in troubleshooting or modifications. Sure, there are ways to "look" through walls, but pictures are much quicker and more certain.
Now my alien returns to his mission to bring cheer to a dark modern world!

@BostonEnginerd Thanks for posting this! I wish I'd read it before our 12-yo gas-fired DHW boiler catastrophically failed on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving in 2023. We ended up replacing it with an electric model recommended by our plumber -- I think they like the brand (HTP) because it has fewer problems with Cambridge water chemistry, which is notorious for damaging plumbing fixtures. That's a legit reason, but it's not a very energy-efficient model even compared to others in its category. Our electric bill has gone up substantially. If hybrid HPWHs had been on my radar, I might have been able to make a better choice even under time pressure. At the time, I was just relieved I was able to find an electrician to do the "hard part" (adding a new 240V circuit) on short notice.

Now I have to think about whether replacing a <2yo electric boiler with a HPWH would make financial sense...

Ok enough politics - most of the replies are being filtered on my own posts 😅

Yesterday I bought $100 worth of Sand for the overnight rain storm.

I shoveled snow between our neighbor's houses and created pathways for water to run off to the street. I used sandbags to direct water away from our home. Lined them all along the base of the lowest point.

We'll find out in a few weeks if any of that water got into our foundation LOL

Just dropped another $1,000 on carpet installation.

The total damage of our leaky basement from a super wet summer is $8,000+ now.

$5,000 - outdoor basement waterproofing
$2,000 - indoor mold removal and floor/drywall refinishing
$1,000 - carpet / underpad replacement

And this was considered a "small" job by most contractors we called. A couple who declined the job because it wasn't worth it to them.

Homeownership is wild... don't buy a house. Get a condo with amenities and no shoveling snow or cutting grass and underground parking

Edit: Forgot the $400 to fix our laundry machine 🙃
