been getting really into HP Lovecraft recently, it's great. I started with Call of Cthulhu and Shadow Over Innsmouth. Now I'm on The Whisperer in the Darkness (IIRC that's the title??)
I bought a huge anthology for $1 off Kobo, also got The Necrominon
if anyone could point me to some really good stories of his pls lmk!! I'm mostly interested in the Cthulhu Mythos. Also I've got no clue about any authors after HPL's death, and which works are worth reading.
About to spend a week in an isolated, off-grid cabin on Kangaroo Island, just off the coast of Australia and am seriously looking forward to some reading time!
If you have any #horror book recommendations that suit this vibe, drop them here!

This Story Hour was the first-ever Barbara Barnett and Barbara A. Barnett Festival of Disambiguation! They both read horror and humor, which we...kind of needed! Also, despite the similarities, both Barbaras have their own style and voice. Both excellent; no need to pick one. Spookymonth winds down in style with stories from M. Belanger and Nadia Bulkin! We start with a '90s Goth-club vampire nightmare and move into the night-gaunt apocalypse. In fact, M. even added a story link to download. Nadia's story lives only in the NecronomiCon 2024 program guide, and here. And in my brain. Forever. You can still watch! #StoryHour2020

This week's Story Hour was a fine specimen for Spookymonth! The incomparable Gemma Files read us a thrilling tale of Viking horrors, and @curtiscchen put a nasty twist into the sort of funny sci-fi spy stories he's known for. “Bat’s Belfry” (1926) by #AugustDerleth
https://deepcuts.blog/2024/02/03/bats-belfry-1926-by-august-derleth/
This week on Deep Cuts in a Lovecraftian Vein we go off an a wild tangent: a survey of Dracula Newspaper Serials in English from 1899-1928.
Anyone else here on Mastodon read extreme horror? I absolutely love it. My wife lent me Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z Brite, and after that I was hooked.
Ironically enough, I absolutely hate horror movies and horror games. Books, though, I can handle. I had to take a tolerance break after churning through three or four titles but I want to get back into it soon.
Definitely not for the faint of heart, but they've provided some of the most memorable reading experiences of my life. The genre ranges from really well-crafted southern gothic to shock gore porn that is nonetheless entertaining.
Besides Exquisite Corpse, the most impressive book I read was Gone to See the River Man by Kristopher Triana. Compared to EC and other titles (notably President's Son by Jon Athan), GTSTRM is relatively tame in terms of content. But the plot and character motivations are phenomenally thought out. The twist is nothing you will expect. It's a very, very gripping read. I think I finished it in two or three days.
This week's Story Hour was so spooky, it scared me away!* The fabulous P.L. McMillan guest-hosted authors Angel Leigh McCoy and T.J. Price. You can still watch...if you dare!
*Scheduled family event, actually. The truth is never as scary.
