Four colour photos of the flowering tree, various degrees of zoom. All are against a clear blue sky. The flowers themselves are a beautiful candy pink, while the calyx/bud is a deep rose magenta. They grow in clusters about the size of a golf ball directly from twigs and branches, which is a bit unusual - sometimes you'll see them blooming directly from the trunk. Each flower is shaped like a typical pea family flower and has a faint sweetpea scent. There are numerous subspecies, and given that this is well outside the tree's natural range I would expect it to be a horticultural selection rather than simple species.

On a white BG, three tulips in a jar. The petals are yellow, shading from buttery to lemony. Most petals have a very thin rim of bright red, and many have a wash of tiny red spots. A couple of the flowers show small green flames.

Polystichum munitum, sword fern. Against blurry background, one frond unfurling.

Prunus 'Italian Prune Plum', with a visiting ant. Blurry green and brown background. In the foreground, two simple with flowers with many prominent stamens. An ant is hanging out in one of them, a moment ago she was feeding on the nectar.

Viola adunca, western blue violet. We're down near ground level, focussed on one flower, but all around are more flowers and fresh new foliage. Raindrops.

They are good little #pollinators, and many species also help control aphids! The larvae of the aphid-eating #hoverflies are voracious little predators that will eat up to a few dozen aphids per day.

Blechnum spicant, deer fern. Against a blurry backdrop of leaf litter, two tightly curled leaes rise, facing in opposite directions. One is taller than the other. At this stage they have red stems and one only sees a little of the green leaflets.

Dodecatheon meadia 'White Shooting Star'. Against a blurry background of leaves, a group of the flowers. Each is downward facing, with prominent stamens in a conical arrangement, a dark structure at their base, and then above them, the recurved petals that turn sharply upward. The petals are yellow at the proximal end, then white, and twist elegantly upward toward the distal.

Erythronium 'Pagoda', sometime known as dog-tooth violet. Against a blurry background of green leaves, a stem with one open flower, one partially open, and several buds. The open flower is downward facing, with pointy pale yellow petals (thus the "dog tooth"), white pistil and deep yellow pollen.

Lunaria annua, honesty. An "x" shaped flower with petals of red violet veined with deep purple and pale yellow stamens. In the bg several more flowers and blurred leafy green.

This was my first trip to Decanso Gardens and I thought the place had a more "wild" feel than the other public gardens I've been to in the city. You can't see them in this picture, but massive oaks (the largest I've ever seen) loom above these trees and while the weather was sunny, it was actually cold in the gardens. Makes you wonder about socal was like when it was still dominated by the Oak forests.

On a stark white background, a single bloom. Looking into it "face on". The petals at ovate, almost triangular, pale yellow, even paler at the proximal end. The corona is similarly pale yellow, green in the very middle. The stamens and pistil are pretty typical and a deeper yellow. It's my favourite daffodil, and the colour is elusive and hard to photograph, very subtle and diffuse. It's prettiest on cloudly rainy spring days.

Flowers on Drosera petiolaris. The type species of the Petiolaris complex of sundews from northern Australia, these plants are finicky in cultivation because they’re adapted to harsh conditions in the wild. Boiling got pretty much year round, bone dry for half of it and swamped the other, in very sandy grainy soils. They’re also known as the woolly sundews as many have either year-round or only during dormancy leaves or buds that are covered in dense fuzzy hairs.
