Another welcome visitor on my aphid-infested fava beans, a syrphid fly larva (or pre-pupa). Might take it home and rear it to adulthood so I can get an ID. I love having my desk covered in vials of mystery critters. #SyrphidFlies #HoverFlies #FlowerFlies #aphids #syrphidae #diptera
This very fluffy yellow hoverfly looks like a newly hatched chick. It is Myathropea florea.
A group of them were chasing around in the sunshine and returning to the same group of leaves.
07/05/2025 - Things we saw on our evening walk after work. Round and over the hill. A lovely small copper butterfly and the wonderful footballer hoverfly
Landed on my laptop. Light conditions were such I could take photos with focus stacking. Working from Pembroke's gardens is a wonderful experience.

Excited about our new project, FLYTHRIVE, with Olombria, NRI, Asplins and Summerberry Company. Hoverflies are amazing: dual-purpose beneficial insects! They are good little #pollinators, and many species also help control aphids! The larvae of the aphid-eating #hoverflies are voracious little predators that will eat up to a few dozen aphids per day.

A Tapered Drone Fly (Eristalis pertinax).
The ivy was rather crowded!
And in this moment, the wings seem to shimmer like a rainbow
Last week, the hoverflies began to visit the peach tree. Today, one let me hover with it for a while. The wings are transparent, so you can notice the anther pads below it
Work by Dr Katie James during her PhD found that getting it right really pays off - if plants were pollinated by both hoverflies and bumblebees, fruits were overall bigger, heavier, and typically better quality than self-pollinated plants, or those pollinated by only hoverflies, and sometimes better than fruits from bumblebee-only plants too. A really good and detailed guide.
I wasn't expecting to find something for #FridayFlyDay, but then I stumbled across this adorable hoverfly in Trinity-Bellwoods on a mint-type plant that was still flowering in the garden! Due to the cold and the rather late hour it was placid and let me get lots of photos.

Late in the year, but a new hoverfly species for the garden, visiting my yellow giant hyssop. Eurasian smoothwing.
This is the last week of #summer but today is hot and #sunny and so the #pollinators are out doing their thing before it gets to damp and dark and the #flowers wither away. In the front #garden, one of the #plants attracts a lot of #bees and #hoverflies. Here are some pictures I took with my #camera using a #MacroLens.
Happy #Saturday.
I thought I would share some #flowers from our #garden this #morning.
Our garden is also full of #spiders, #hoverflies and other flying and flapping things at the moment, which is fabulous.

13/09/2024 - A fine day out. The old train from Keith to Dufftown to look round 12th century Balvenie Castle. Then back on the train for chippy tea in Keith and on to Meikle Balloch Hill for a new Aberdeenshire hill after sunset for us.
