#Humpback #Whale Song Follows #ZipfsLaw, A Fundamental Law Of Human #Language
And some #whales exhibit Menzerath’s law even more strongly than humans.
#MenzerathsLaw and Zipf’s focus on this kind of streamlining. Menzerath’s is all about how longer words or vocalizations are more efficient if made up of shorter elements (like syllables or notes), while Zipf’s law states that common and shorter elements will be used more often in efficient language than longer, rarer ones.

""I was contacted by these two photographers, and they told me that they had captured what they believed to be the first photographic evidence of two #humpback #whales mating," Stack said. "I was a bit skeptical at first."

But sure enough, the photo they sent showed two humpbacks mid-coitus, one clearly penetrating the other."

@SeaFury

When my whalewatching group used to stay at #ByronBay to watch the #humpback migrations, we regularly ate at Earth & Sea Pizza.

Most ordered pizza with pineapple which drew sighs from the purists.

Then, one year I turned up with bananas & asked the owners if they’d add banana to my pizza as well as pineapple.

Everyone laughed at me. It tasted fantastic. I ordered that pizza for the rest of our trip. Others did too.

On my final #whalewatch I was surprised to see it on their menu 🤯

Rise in #humpback #whale #sightings in the #UK

Visitors to the UK’s vast coastlines have been surprised by an increasing number of humpback whale sightings throughout the winter months.

Between 29 December and 8 January, the Isles of Scilly have reported 17 sightings of whales, including a sighting of an individual called ‘Pi’, who has turned up around the archipelago annually since 2019.

The two-day removal process to lift a whale #carcass from a #Geraldton beach cost city ratepayers $38,000.

In July last year, the council made the decision to remove a 20-tonne #humpback whale carcass, which had been washed up at Greys Beach for a week.

Two cranes were called in to load the whale onto a truck, and the carcass was transported to the Meru Waste Facility, where it was buried.

'Whale influencers' piloting low-flying #drones hinder research and risk injury.

"Seeing 7 drones flying above a #humpback cow-calf pair made me realise that people's desire for images comes above the respect of our wildlife, and that is really disconcerting,".

It's just one example of a crowded sky over whales, which scientists say interferes with important research and risks animal welfare.
