Finally, the separate box of POWER9 upgrades appears. These are for the dual socket 144 thread Talos II here at home (the LC-922 are in colo). Relocation has turned up a lot of missing hardware, very pleased about this turn of events.

So, the long lost box contains:
- 4x Samsung 883-DCT 2TB SSDs for local storage ZFS pool (with 2x Optane NVMe cache)
- 3x PM863a 240GB SSDs for the OS
- always more RAM
- an OcuLink 4x to U.2 cable w/ Optane drive floating around somewhere
- Mellanox 50GbE QSFP28 NIC for RDMA fun

@dexter finally, we can continue the project with appropriate hardware

"If you bought a ThinkPad between 1995 and 2017, it was probably designed under the oversight of David W. Hill, who served as lead designer under both IBM and Lenovo for those 22 years. We caught up with Hill, who today runs his own firm, ThinkNext Design, to talk about the history of ThinkPad, what drove him to make key design decisions, and the products he wanted to come out with but just couldn't."

If we go with What Multics Calls Things as a guide to what the name would have been in an alternative history, it is a "search list".

The mind boggles as to what we would have got with an IBM heritage.

"Authorized Ordered Command Location Facility Set" or some such.

And they'd have made it a set, too. No duplicates. (-:

Since its debut in 1992 by IBM, ThinkPad PCs have been a symbol of business computing. I still have an IBM Thinkpad 380ED from 1997. It's 2.5" thick, weighs 7.5#, and cost $3100. It has the little red eraser TrackPoint in the middle of the keyboard.

The #Intel 286 was an odd one. It had a 24-bit addressing mode (improved from the 8086/8088's 20-bit addressing) with protected virtual memory, so that was cool. But using this mode was a one-way trip: the only way to get back to the 8086/8088 “real” mode was to reboot!

But the #IBM engineers designing the PC/AT had other plans…

"It's almost hard to describe IBM as one culture," said Dadgar during a later briefing. "Because things like #RedHat are so different. So I'd say Red Hat is much closer to us in terms of [having] #opensource in their DNA. They are very community-oriented.

#IBM and #AIX friends: is there any place I can get a shell account on an AIX box (any version, any processor generation) for <= 25USD (not a hard cap). To be clear, I'm not looking for Linux on POWER, but prpoper AIX.
