On our fifth day travelling from Gorey, 600 km by ferry and 2,500 km by rail, we arrive in sunny Syracuse.

No more travelling for 7 days!

Last train ferry in Europe? Had to make the pilgrimage.

On schedule arrival into Villa San Giovanni and first glimpses of Sicily. The view from the train station is spectacular.

The train will be split and shunted onto a ferry next. A process that takes quite a bit of time.

Day 4 - somewhere north of Salerno - Taormina

A pretty good night’s sleep all considered. Several lazy hours ahead before we cross the Straits of Messina on the second ferry of the trip.

Intercity Notte from Milano Centrale to Taormina. Continuation of Interrail Day 1 which started at 06:45 this morning - a 31 hour Interrail day.

18 mins late departing - but what’s 18 mins?

We were 40 minutes late into Milano Porta Garibaldi but that’s not a problem, first class seats on the old TGV were very comfortable.

Passport checks at the platform exit but we seemed to be either too white or old to warrant any inspection! It’s not acceptable- check everyone or no one.

Bonjour Modane! So nice to see you again. Last station before the Frejus tunnel into Italy.

This route was closed for 18 months until the end of March due to a landslide. Much easier to plan a journey this way than travelling through Switzerland - though that would be nice too!

I'm on a train! (Again) On an island!.

Seems like they use hybrid trains, sadly no overhead electrification. Lots of options for solar and wind here. But the connection porte torres to the south is also only twice a day.

Good to knows: when arriving by ferry, a bus drops you off close to the marina train station. But its not so obvious. :) there are places for coffee nearby, but the station seems to have no ticket buying options? The central station of porte torres is worse.

And not so high speed train travel… 0km/h
