“We keep talking about an imperial court that is slowly but certainly constructing an imperial executive, but none of that can happen without the learned helplessness of an American public that was intended to be sovereign.”

"'When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.'

Renewed scrutiny of Trump’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein reminds us of just how Trump’s strategy with women — assaulting them without permission, on the assumption that legal accountability was unlikely — mirrors his strategy for governing. Grab ‘em by the institutions."

"They've turned constitutional law into a protection racket for inherited wealth while maintaining the fiction that they're engaged in neutral jurisprudential analysis."

Brock quotes Peter Shane:

"Trump's authoritarian presidency 'is not a distortion of the Roberts Court's theory of the presidency; it is the Court's theory of the presidency, come to life.'"

The Atlantic · This Is the Presidency John Roberts Has BuiltBy Peter M. Shane

I recommend Mike Brock's valuable analysis of the primary project of the Roberts Court: to dismantle the New Deal (and, in the process, the Constitution), in service to the super-rich oligarchs who have bought and paid for this court over several decades, with precisely that goal.

Notes From The Circus · On the Supreme Court's Constitutional Vandalism in Service of Inherited WealthBy Mike Brock

Per The Atlantic 👀

What America is witnessing is a remaking of the American #presidency into something closer to a #dictatorship. Trump is enacting this change and taking advantage of its possibilities, but he is not the inventor of its claim to constitutional legitimacy. That project is the work of #JohnRoberts.
Ronald Reagan won the presidency in 1980 while Roberts was clerking for then–Associate Justice William H. Rehnquist, who represented, at the time, the far right on the Burger Court.

BY AND LARGE, CONGRESS DOESN'T WANT POWERS - MOST OF ITS MEMBERS ARE ALTOGETHER TOO SATISFIED WITH CARRYING TRUMP'S LUGGAGE AND VOTING AGAINST THE INTERESTS OF THEIR CONSTITUENTS

Checks and balances no longer exist. Congress and the John Roberts Maga Tribunal have capitulated. What comes next is up to the People.

If there is to be a revolution, as is looking increasingly possible, one of the main people to blame is going to be John Roberts, a traitor to the Constitution, the rule of law, and the People. He might just as well hand the keys for the Judicial Branch to Donald Trump and then leave town.

"The prisoners were on the ground in Juba, the South Sudanese capital, one day later.

We have no way of knowing what will happen to these men now. The Trump administration claims it received assurances that they would not be tortured. But it has not disclosed what provisions it has taken, if any, to ensure that South Sudan’s government makes good on those assurances."

Linda Chavez thinks that the decision of the "pro-life" Supreme Court's right-wing Catholic bloc to allow deportations to third-world countries should shock American consciences (the terms "pro-life" and "right-wing Catholic bloc" are my addition, not hers).

She writes,

The resistance to breakthroughs in recognizing the rights of minority communities that began with civil rights legislation according rights to people of color has expanded to bitter resistance among both evangelicals and the U.S. Catholic bishops to rights for women and LGBTQ people. This resistance is at the heart of the determination to dismantle democracy.

The media have focused largely on white evangelicals as the big force intent on replacing democracy with theocracy, but behind the scenes, the U.S. Catholic bishops, who have done everything they can to make it appear their hands are not dirty, have pulled the strings, using white evangelicals while avoiding media scrutiny.

White evangelicals, who had never said a peep about the abortion issue and couldn't care less about it, became gung-ho in the anti-abortion cause, with the U.S. Catholic bishops quietly engineering this response behind the scenes — and assisting Leonard Leo in the stacking the Supreme Court with hard-right Opus Dei-leaning Catholics.

That alliance has had fateful and lasting consequences. It led first to the formation of the Religious Right and eventually to MAGA and white Christian nationalism.

To make the Religious Right's crusade against the Democrats and human rights appear more morally acceptable than it was when it was born out of racism, the Catholic bishops focused on abortion.

The history that people concerned about the Supreme Court's destruction of democracy — destruction driven by theocratic ideas — need to know is the following:

When civil rights legislation was enacted by the Democrats in the 1960s, white evangelicals kicked and screamed. At this point, the US Catholic bishops allied themselves with white evangelicals.

"These forces, wealthy, secretive, and politically connected, have spent decades quietly embedding their ideology into American institutions.

Their goal is nothing short of a return to a feudalistic model of governance: hierarchy, submission, and clerical control. They speak of 'natural law' and 'order' but act out of ambition, not mercy."
