Dunlawton Sugar Mill Garden • Port Orange, FL

In 1835, this former sugar mill was burnt down by the Seminoles. They were protesting of the capturing of Chief Osceola, who is still a well-known figure to this day. The Seminoles’ string of attacks were successful in the area, freeing enslaved people working on this land and establishing their strength against tyranny. Their tribe is also notably the only one in the US to never have had to sign a peace treaty with the government. Today this place holds unique beauty in its Florida nature and deep history within it.
