The sense of hope. It was still there. How curious, he thought.

They had organized a party. They were now certain that the food wouldn't last long enough to see the dust settle, so they thought they might as well eat properly one last time. They would drink the last of the apple-juice in place of champagne.

And yet, he felt that faint sense of hope for the year to come. Just conditioning, he supposed. A little pang of muscle memory. But he was thankful for it.
